Prof John Lennox rocks
"The Bible is the only religious authority, baptized Christians are a universal priesthood, and salvation is free."
"Luther openly questioned the teachings of the Roman Catholic church, in particular, the nature of penance, the authority of the pope and the usefulness of indulgences. He taught that the authority of the priests were merely man made and therefore did not affect faith. In other words they were corrupting Christianity. Luther also taught that anyone could be a Christian, and they did not need to go through the priests in order to learn how to be a Christian. Salvation is attained by faith through Grace al one, meaning all they needed was faith which one got from reading the scriptures, not following all the man-made rites and rituals of the church."
Now if the Bible preached that God and the evil one is the same and that you go to Heaven no matter what, I would agree with you, but neither Luther nor the Bible says that.
Look, I get you believe and I get that others don't. But it is not as simple as just praying and suddenly you'll believe. What happens when an atheist prays and asks for guidance, the lord to fill them with faith, forgiveness, or whatever, and nothing happens? You got it, that atheist begins to wonder who exactly it is the are talking to, and why they are being ignored. Add to that the many unanswered questions and it is not hard to see why people are losing faith.
Becs, I have read enough on Luther to know that what you attribute to him is quite the opposite of his teachings.
I see ... so with the same tongue you can tell a person he's a black c_nt and then soon there after praise God with it, right? ... and all's good?
Interesting?
Tell me something ... how many times a week do you wear your righteous hat?
We've already seen the days where you musta left the hat at home.
Pfffffffffffffffffhahahahahahahahahaha!
"Just like they ask us to read about science."
That is hilarious! Poor dear, imagine being asked to read up about nasty old science!
LMAO!
Also, the above mealy-mouthed and preachy little whine would have been bad enough coming from any old Happy Clappy but to hear it from a foul-mouthed and racist hater like ForeverArsehole is ironic indeed.
All I can say is that I'm very glad that this deeply unpleasant and small-minded little bigot is in the Creationist corner with Baboon-ou.
Einstein is a perfect example. He was not an atheist but appears to see religions as man made interpretations of the truth.
In Europe their has also been a trend over the last 400 years that countries or individuals who are protestant (less religious)are generally richer than Catholics (more religious).
Protestant (Protest against absolute faith) is seen by many economists as the birth of modern day capitalism- which encourages independent thought.
It does raise questions who is generally closer to the truth and reality. (Truth being both science, spirituality, or any other means). The people who generally follow the individual religions like Christianity or those that do not.
While it is hard to generalize, it cant be ignored that most of the greatest minds over the last 400 years are not religious- at least not in the way of being Christian, Muslim etc.
Imagine for a moment you were God. You created the universe and you created religion like Christianity and Muslim. Would it not make sense for all the leading minds to be devout religious people, and not those that did not believe in the religion that you have created?
Blue ... ForeverArsehole is spouting horse manure ... as usual.
Any relationship is a two way street. It's not you speaking your heart out and your relationship partner ignoring you flat. That my friend is not a relationship.
That's just you desperate to get a life.
For you to have a proper relationship with God you need your spirit quickened. Without that quickening you can forget it. The only way is to be born again. His Spirit quickens your spirit and a door is opened.
There is a whole lot more to it than saying a few words in prayer.
I specialised in Religious History.
I think it's safe to say that Baboon-ou did not get the responses he was hoping for when he posted the opening comment of this thread.
Oh well, at least he has ForeverArsehole on his side.
LMAO!
I think the oaks here are finding all this a bit too difficult as clearly they have made no attempt to examine this statement to see the logical blunders made by Hawkins. But never fear brother Beeno is here to help!
Hawking of course thinks philosopy is dead. It’s a pity he makes this error as one of the main tasks of philosophy is to train people in the art of definition, logical analysis and argument.
The first question is – what does Hawkins mean when he uses the word “nothing”. Note the ASSUMPTION made in the first part of the statement “because there is a law of gravity …” Hawkins assumes, therefore that a law of gravity itself exists. One presumes also that he believes that gravity itself exists, for the simple reason that an abstract mathematical law on its own would be vacuous with nothing to describe (Hahahhahaha - I do hope the oaks are following this). The main issue for now, however, is that gravity or a law of gravity is NOT nothing! Hawking appears, therefore to be SIMULTANEOUSLY assertingthat the universe is created from nothing and something – not a promising start! (Hahahahahhahahaha )
The situation does not improve when we move on to the LOGIC of the second part of Hawkin’s statement: “The universe can and will create itself out of nothing”.
This assertion is self-contradictory oaks. If we say x creates Y, we presuppose the existence of X in the first place to bring Y into existence (are the oaks following this very complex matter!! Hahahhahaha).
If therefore we say X creates X, we imply that we are presupposing the existence of X. This is OBVIOUSLY SELF-CONTRADICTORY and thus LOGICALLY INCOHERENT. To presuppose the existence of the universe to account for its own existence sounds like out of Alice in Wonderland, NOT SCIENCE.
It is seldom that one finds in a single statement two distinct levels of CONTRADICTION. First contradiction –He says the Universe comes from nothing that turns out to be something (the law of gravity) . Second contradiction Then he says the universe creates itself.
BUT that is not all. His notion that a law of nature (gravity) explains the existence of the universe is also self-contradictory since a law of nature, by definition, surely depends for ITS OWN EXISTENCE ON THE PRIOR EXISTENCE OF THE NATURE IT PURPORTS TO DESCRIBE.
Thus the main conclusion of the book turns out not simply to be a self-contradiction, which would be disaster enough, but to be a triple self-contradiction. Philosophers just might be tempted to comment: so that is what comes of saying philosophy is dead.
I do hope the oaks are getting a glimmer or is this stuff too difficult? Can you see the desparate mess these atheists are in.
Read God and Stephen Hawking by Prof John Lennox.
Klown, what's this "quickening" you're on about? Are we talking Cosmology or are we talking about immortals trying to cut each others heads off as in the Highlander?
Well Baboon-ou, that's probably because no-one on here has agreed with Hawking's alleged statement and not one person on this thread is trying to claim that anything came from nothing. You're the only one who keeps banging on about gravity and nothingness.
On Tuesday evening I attended the debate between Richard Dawkins and John Lennox at Oxford’s Natural History Museum. This was the second public encounter between the two men, but it turned out to be very different from the first. Lennox is the Oxford mathematics professor whose book, God’s Undertaker: Has Science Buried God? is to my mind an excoriating demolition of Dawkins’s overreach from biology into religion as expressed in his book The God Delusion -- all the more devastating because Lennox attacks him on the basis of science itself. In the first debate, which can be seen on video on this website, Dawkins was badly caught off-balance by Lennox’s argument precisely because, possibly for the first time, he was being challenged on his own chosen scientific ground.
This week’s debate, however, was different because from the off Dawkins moved it onto safer territory– and at the very beginning made a most startling admission. He said:
A serious case could be made for a deistic God.
This was surely remarkable. Here was the arch-apostle of atheism, whose whole case is based on the assertion that believing in a creator of the universe is no different from believing in fairies at the bottom of the garden, saying that a serious case can be made for the idea that the universe was brought into being by some kind of purposeful force. A creator. True, he was not saying he was now a deist; on the contrary, he still didn't believe in such a purposeful founding intelligence, and he was certainly still saying that belief in the personal God of the Bible was just like believing in fairies. Nevertheless, to acknowledge that ‘a serious case could be made for a deistic god’ is to undermine his previous categorical assertion that
...all life, all intelligence, all creativity and all ‘design’ anywhere in the universe is the direct or indirect product of Darwinian natural selection...Design cannot precede evolution and therefore cannot underlie the universe.
In Oxford on Tuesday night, however, virtually the first thing he said was that a serious case could be made for believing that it could.
Anthony Flew, the celebrated philosopher and former high priest of atheism, spectacularly changed his mind and concluded -- as set out in his book There Is A God -- that life had indeed been created by a governing and purposeful intelligence, a change of mind that occurred because he followed where the scientific evidence led him. The conversion of Flew, whose book contains a cutting critique of Dawkins’s thinking, has been dismissed with unbridled scorn by Dawkins – who now says there is a serious case for the position that Flew now adopts!
Unfortunately, so stunning was this declaration it was not pursued on Tuesday evening. Instead, Dawkins was able to move the debate onto a specific attack on Christian belief in the divinity of Jesus, which is a very different argument and obscured the central point of contention – the claim that science had buried God. The fact that Dawkins now appears to be so reluctant publicly to defend his own position on his own territory of scientific rationalism – and indeed, even to have shifted his ground – is a tribute above all to the man he was debating once again on Tuesday evening.
Afterwards, I asked Dawkins whether he had indeed changed his position and become more open to ideas which lay outside the scientific paradigm. He vehemently denied this and expressed horror that he might have given this impression. But he also said other things which suggested to me that some of his own views simply don't meet the criteria of empirical evidence that he insists must govern all our thinking.
For example, I put to him that, since he is prepared to believe that the origin of all matter was an entirely spontaneous event, he therefore believes that something can be created out of nothing -- and that since such a belief runs counter to the very scientific principles of verifiable evidence which he tells us should govern all our thinking, this is itself precisely the kind of irrationality, or ‘magic’, which he scorns. In reply he said that, although he agreed this was a problematic position, he did indeed believe that the first particle arose spontaneously from nothing, because the alternative explanation – God -- was more incredible.(PLEASE NOTE ROOITWIT AND THE OTHER OAKS THE FIRST PARTICLE AROSE SPONTANEOUSLY FROM NOTHING ACCORDING TO rICHARD DAWKINS AND HENCE HTEIR HUIGE PROBLEM!!!!!!) Later, he amplified this by saying that physics was coming up with theories to show how matter could spontaneously be created from nothing (NONE OF WHICH HOLD ANY WATER!!). But as far as I can see – and as Anthony Flew elaborates – these theories cannot answer the crucial question of how the purpose-carrying codes which gave rise to self–reproduction in life-forms arose out of matter from which any sense of purpose was totally absent. So such a belief, whether adduced by physicists or anyone else, does not rest upon rational foundations.
Even more jaw-droppingly, Dawkins told me that, rather than believing in God, he was more receptive to the theory that life on earth had indeed been created by a governing intelligence – but one which had resided on another planet. Leave aside the question of where that extra-terrestrial intelligence had itself come from, is it not remarkable that the arch-apostle of reason finds the concept of God more unlikely as an explanation of the universe than the existence and plenipotentiary power of extra-terrestrial little green men? (HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHA)
The other thing that jumped out at me from this debate was that, although Dawkins insisted over and over again that all he was concerned with was whether or not something was true, he himself seems to be pretty careless with historical evidence. Anthony Flew, for example, points out in his own book that Dawkins’s claim in The God Delusion that Einstein was an atheist is manifestly false, since Einstein had specifically denied that he was either a pantheist or an atheist (PLEASE NOTE SHARKBOK AND OTHERS).
In the debate, under pressure from Lennox Dawkins was actually forced to retract his previous claim that Jesus had probably ‘never existed’. And in a revealing aside, when Lennox remarked that the Natural History Museum in which they were debating – in front of dinosaur skeletons -- had been founded for the glory of God, Dawkins scoffed that of course this was absolutely untrue.
But it was true. Construction of the museum was instigated between 1855 and 1860 by the Regius Professor of Medicine, Sir Henry Acland. According to Keith Thomson of the Sigma XI Scientific Research Society, the funds for the project came from the surplus in the University Press’s Bible account as this was deemed only appropriate for a building dedicated to science as a glorification of God’s works. Giving his reasons for building the museum, Acland himself said that it would provide the opportunity to obtain the
knowledge of the great material design of which the Supreme Master-Worker has made us a constituent part...The student of life, bearing in mind the more general laws which in the several departments above named he will have sought to appreciate, will find in the collections of Zoology, combined with the Geological specimens and the dissections of the Anatomist, a boundless field of interest and of inquiry, to which almost every other science lends its aid : from each Science he borrows a special light to guide him through the ranges of extinct and existing animal forms, from the lowest up to the highest type, which; last and most perfect, but pre-shadowed in previous ages, is seen in Man. By the aid of physiological illustrations he begins to understand how hard to unravel are the complex mechanisms and prescient intentions of the Maker of all; and he slowly learns to appreciate what exquisite care is needed for discovering the real action of even an apparently comprehended machine.
Truth is indeed the crux of the matter – but Dawkins seems to understand the word rather differently from the rest of us.The great question, however, is whether his own theory is now in the process of further evolution -- and whether it might even jump the species barrier into what is vulgarly known by lesser mortals as faith.
i FEAR THIS IS BEYOND THE OAKS?
There is no science on this topic. All the rational explanations of existence start well after existence starts. Nobody can explain the beginning. And in that void, any theory is as good as the next theory. Cloak yourself with science, cloak yourself with religion....you can't know the unknowable. And in that light, laughing at the next man's attempt to make sense of it all, is ignorant.
Thus far nobody has attempted to refute what Lennox has proven is a triple self-contradiction by Hawking. And they will noyt be able to do so. Poor Richard dawkins is on the ropes and knows it.
Now if we go into the information encoded into the universe the situation only worsens terribly for the already undone atheist. Antony Flew was honest enough to admit he was wrong. Dawkins is still evolving but on the verge of collapse as can be seen in the above post I made.
You see oaks science has finally began to understand a little about the universe. Its origins- once it never was. The blinding complexity and intelligence -eg the human genome writen in a language containing 4 letters. In the begining was the WORD and the Word was with God and the Word was God. The Greek word logos has as one of its root meanings information. Of course all this speaks of mind. Mind became before the Universe. Atheists are begining to see this - science is screaming at them - the heavens declare the glory of the eternal God.
Haaaaahahahaha ... I had a feeling you'd be bringing Connor MaCleod up.
No cutting off of heads I'm afraid.
I take it you've heard of being born again, right?
There's something that comes with it. It's hard to explain.
If you can envisage a small flicker of a flame being doused with petrol you'll basically get the gist of it. This petrol is The Holy Spirit. He comes over you in a dramatic way, igniting your spirit. It's called the quickening.
It changes everything. Puts you on the same page as God. You speak to Him and He to you. He hears you and He enables you to hear Him. Not with the ear but within. Your inner man.
A relationship with God, without the Holy Spirit isn't possible.
Yeah I know I sound like a loon.
This is what I've experienced and that is why I have no doubt of His existence.
In reply he said that, although he agreed this was a problematic position, he did indeed believe that the first particle arose spontaneously from nothing, because the alternative explanation – God -- was more incredible.(PLEASE NOTE ROOITWIT AND THE OTHER OAKS THE FIRST PARTICLE AROSE SPONTANEOUSLY FROM NOTHING ACCORDING TO your man RICHARD DAWKINS AND HENCE The HUGE PROBLEM atheists like Hawking and Krauss have!!!!!!
rooitwit have you any clue whatsoever? Apart from vain babblings are you reading the evidence presented or is it just a case you have no answer other than to babble away. I mean it should be easy for you to refute the triple contradiction that Lennox points out. Or refute the statements of Einstein, Hawking, Krauss and Dawkin about there once being nothing meaning nothing.
What is also irrefutable is that eternal mind came before the universe. Darwins archaic theory is in tatters. Hence Flews departure from it - the science led me to God. Mindless matter cannot produce information.
It's game set and match unless there is any plausible refutation of the points raised about the begining of the universe. Bluster does not of course constitute refutation.
Well, as long as you know that, you're at least one step ahead of Baboon-ou!
also remember one thing I am merely quoting these guys. so clealry theyare stupid too. How one longs to be "enlightened" by this dope rooitwit. What a fossil!!
Best just admit like Flew did you got it hoplessly wrong because you were brainwashed by the system and simply went along.
Further, it should be understood that every effect must resemble its cause. This is because, simply put, you cannot give what you do not have, so it is impossible for an effect to possess something its originating cause did not have. That being the case, how can one believe that an impersonal, amoral, purposeless, and meaningless universe accidentally created beings that are full of personality, morals, meaning, and purpose? Only mind can create mind. In the end it is either matter before mind or mind before matter, and all scientific, philosophical, and reasonable evidence points to the latter.
As Flew realised.
You have sort of answered the 1st question by denying everything you said a few years ago so I'll be fair, it's just 2 and 3 you need to answer.
Go on then, wipe those tears and be a big brave baboon for once!
2. Did man and dinosaur ever co-exist?
3. What were a breeding pair of arctic foxes, australian kangaroos, south american llamas, siberian tigers and north american bison (not to mention a pair of T-Rexes depending on your answer to #2 ) all doing hanging around Mount Ararat at the time Noah built his ark?
And to think I've been compared to this friggin loon.
How depressing.
Further, it should be understood that every effect must resemble its cause. This is because, simply put, you cannot give what you do not have, so it is impossible for an effect to possess something its originating cause did not have.
One of the leading causes for debate where black-holes are concerned. The reason being that when you start out with something, that thing must be present in the final result. So you can mix the particle with numerous others, or divide it into bits, or add bits to it, but ultimately it will still be there. Hence, when something crosses the event horizon of a black-hole and it is said to be entirely obliterated, it defies a very basic IDEA in physics.
If you do some reading though, you will discover that it is actually only a theory, not a fundamental principle of physics. And it concerns only particles and the fact that they are there and flow through various configurations with other particles as the universe goes about it's daily business.
It doesn't at all mean that you cannot combine particles to form living things which have all the attributes we understand life to have.
Only mind can create mind.
Another IDEA, is that only mind can create mind. Flew is coming from a philosophical standpoint when he says that, not a scientific one. His statement equates to nothing more than a guess. He is, it seems, confused when trying to understand how complexity arrived in the universe.
Well here are some examples...
Have you ever heard of something called The G ame of Life? It was a simple game developed by a mathematician in the UK. The game itself had only four extremely simple rules, and when he pressed play on his computer, those four very simple rules gave rise to an astonishing amount of complexity. Multicellular organism levels of complexity. Crazy huh!?
Also, there is a software called Euphoria, which has applications in various fields, one of them being video games. Anyway, the programmers copied evolution when making it. The idea was to avoid the need for writing code for every part of a system. IE use simple rules to avoid the labor of complexity, in arriving at a desired result. So you enter a generation of the subject "species", be it a computer game character or a new tool for drilling a hole, as an example. Then you hit play and the software, using the parameters you entered, similar to the way the universe or a habitat creates parameters for a species to evolve via natural selection...and hey presto the software, without any further coding creates for you the best possible result. Normally the result is extremely simple on the surface but upon back tracking the level of complexity that was involved in the crossbreeding of samples with desirable traits is so intriguing that one struggles to understand it.
I will try to make another point.
Would you say "super-mind" and "mind" are the same or similar? Since you have agreed with Flew that only Mind can create Mind. In reality, "Super-Mind" is about as similar to "Mind" as what your mind is to a that of a fruit-fly(Insert Beeno joke here). I doubt you, Beeno, consider your mind to be anything like that of a fruit fly's mind. In other words, though there may be some superficial similarities between Mind and Super-Mind, they are not even nearly the same thing.
Yet it is entirely conceivable that Mind is able to create Super-Mind. We are busy doing it right now, and have been for some years(I won't bore you with examples). So mind is able to create something vastly different and way more powerful than itself. Where does this leave you when pondering the creation of Mind. Could it not just as easily be the creation of something much simpler? I think it could.
Dropping water on the floor. If i knew the position of every molecule prior to dropping it, and i apply the laws of physics, the i would be able to determine where each particle would end up. Hell i could simulate that event in a computer. But, if the act of dropping it created new laws, and the old laws that applied when the water was still in the glass have now all vanished or changed to the point where they are unrecognizable, then there is no possible way to make a simulation like that. IE you cannot tell what came before the big bang!
But it does not prove GOD!
The onus lay with you to prove GOD, because you are claiming he exists. Disproving science, even every last bit of what we have come to understand, still does not prove god even in the slightest.
It's exactly the same as saying, you cannot play Wonderwall on your guitar therefore it is irrefutable that you must be able to play, i dunno, some crappy Bob Marley song!
Beeno, forget about disproving science. Lets throw the ball back at you and say...Go on, prove god to us. Give one one tiny shred of evidence. Seriously, anything!
Wait i sense a very circular argument coming? Life, faith and the bible are not proof, jus t so you know.
Becs, can you back up your statement with something more substantial please?
Rooi, here is my best attempt at answering your questions, leaned heavily on my dad who frankly is a lot more versed than I am in this type of stuff:
Question #2 - a natural reading of Genesis 1 leads us to believe that dinosaurs and man existed together since all the land animals and man were created on the 6th day. The discovery of dinosaur fossils that contain blood cells and soft tissue indicate that the dinosaurs did not die out 65 million years ago but a few thousand years ago at the most. The existence of cave paintings depicting creatures just like dinosaurs seem to indicate that man lived alongside dinosaurs. Also, history is replete with dragon stories from around the world and prominent men like Alexander and Marco Polo had encounters with dragons (these were probably the remnant of dinosaurs produced by those that had been taken on the ark) Also, engravings of dragons were found on the walls of Babylon and other architectual ruins around the world. One month on the Chinese calendar is the month of the dragon! These were hunted by men and eventually became extinct.
Question #3 - there are several explanations. One is that the climate was quite different before the flood and more tropical (because of the canopy that surrounded the earth which produced abundant vegetation for the animals) so you would expect a variety of animals to flourish together in one place. No arctic foxes until the ice age which followed the flood as they would have adapted to the new climatic conditions.. Another explanation is of course supernatural. The bible says they came unto Noah. He did not have to go and find them. Did the animals instinctively know a catastrophe was impending even as they seem to do today? One thing to keep in mind is that God would have taken the young and the juveniles on the ark for the purpose of reproducing after the flood. They would have eaten less and slept more during the year long flood. The capacity of the ark was equal to 240 box cars so there was plenty of room for 2 each of about 8,000 basic species. The average size of a dinosaur was about the size of a sheep. There were many more smaller dinosaurs than the larger. I doubt if there were full adult size T-Rex's on the ark.
For the record, I have been a Christian since I was young and yes I am one of those neanderthals who believe in a young earth as from what I have seen there is sufficient evidence for it as well as plenty of difficult things to understand about it. Not that this particular issue is critical to my faith or even to the existence of God. Can God be proven? I don't think so, at least not in the scientific or philosophical sense, for where would the need be for faith but there are plenty of excellent evidences and arguments for His existence and I can't deny what I have seen in my own life and the lives of others. Also, He promises that if you humble yourself and seek Him that he will indeed "prove" himself. I think it would take at least the initial mental step of acknowledging that He could exist. From what I have seen everyone has faith in something, whether that is their interpretation of science, their ability to reason, or whatever. For me part of the faith equation has to be what the consequences are if it is misplaced?
Anyway, I think you seriously underestimate the number of species involved unless you're giving them an extra few million years to adapt to their new environments after the flood. If you honestly believe that the basic cat (for example) could have evolved into jaguars, tigers, lynxes, snow leopards, cheetahs, lions, pumas and whatever else in the few thousand years that the bible allows for then I have to question your understanding of evolution and/or natural selection.
The picture I put up of the giant submarine below the surface is actually more plausible than your notion that all the species on the planet all got onto a ship and co-existed while they sailed around for a year until all the water mysteriously disappeared.
Anyway, indulge me a little longer and explain to me what all of these animals would have eaten for a year. Even if they were young, what did the carnivores eat and what did the little elephants and buffalo (not forgetting the baby brontosauri and triceratrops) graze on while they were stuck on a wooden ship (which presumably would have including a breeding pair of hungry termites). How do you YECs explain how these animals could conceivably have been fed while the earth was underwater?
