Samoa are always physical, they did put a lot effort into this match however knock ons and off side calls was a on going issue which disrupted their momentum, Fa'osiliva was the stand out player in the team, real talent.
I'm aware that the ABs didn't play at full strength with a few Highlanders and Hurricanes players missing though I excepted better display from the ABs considering the quality of players that were involved, McCaw, SBW and Dagg still looks off pace and out of form, they just failed to impress.
On current form this year my AB's backline for RC would be 15. Ben Smith, 14. Milner-Skudder, 13. Fekitoa, 12. Nonu, 11. J Savea, 10 Sopoaga, 9. Aaron Smith.
Samoa vs ABs
15. B Smith 14. Skudder 13. Smith 12. Nonu 11. Savea 10. Carter 9. A Smith. Sopoaga? Your dreaming lol.
Conrad Smith at 13? Meh too slow.
I did not watch the game - but read the following match report:-
"A rusty All Blacks side, battered by bone-crunching tackles, received a pre-World Cup fright when they scrambled to a 25-16 victory over Samoa in their historic one-off Test in Apia on Wednesday.
The steady boot of Dan Carter saved New Zealand as the first match between the rugby-obsessed nations in Samoa produced the closest result of all their six meetings.
The Test was the first of a five-match build-up by the All Blacks before they name a 31-man squad for their World Cup defence starting in England in September.
Close-marking by the powerful Samoans and multiple handling errors by both sides meant the clash never reached the free-flowing heights expected. The All Blacks were held to 12-3 in the first-half with all the points coming from penalties. The only tries in the match, scored by All Blacks debutant George Moala and rugged Samoan flanker Alafoti Faosiliva, both came in the second half.
Passions were ignited before kick-off with the All Blacks laying down the challenge with their traditional Haka, or native war dance, and Samoa responding with their fearsome Siva Tau.
But after kick-off the fever rapidly ebbed. New Zealand's set piece appeared to click effortlessly into place with a scrum too powerful for Samoa and several stolen lineouts.
But attempts to run Samoa off the rock-hard ground in the 30 Celsius heat sank beneath a constant wave of close-marking Samoans.
Attempts to change tack with forward drives and a Carter cross-kick to wing Moala failed to breach the Samoans defence. But as Johnny Leota and Alesana Tuilagi led a hard-charging Samoan defence the penalties flowed when the off-side line was breached.
Carter was able to land four penalties while Tusi Pisi replied with one for Samoa in the only scoring before half-time.
The Carter-Moala routine eventually paid off early in the second spell when the right wing scooped up a cross-kick and ran 30 metres to the line. Faosiliva's try, 15 minutes from time, was the result of two powerful runs in one move through the flagging All Blacks defence by the Bath loose forward.
Tim Nanai Williams's conversion pulled Samoa within six points of the All Blacks and in sight of a shock result before Carter kicked his sixth penalty late in the game to put the outcome beyond doubt."
The Samoans have always been strong in defense, but their forward pack never was up to standard - so I am not surprised by what I read in the report.
However, one must bear in mind that none of the players of the Highlanders or the Hurricanes - who played in the SR final - were in the team and the AB team would be strengthened by their selection.
However, on average not a good enough start for the AB's this year and they will have problems when they meet a team with a stronger forward pack.
@Jerome: Statistically yes. When he has space. But when he doesn't he is non existed, same with Naholo. Test Rugby is not Super Rugby. Smith too slow? Shows what you know. Smith is one of the most intelligent players in the game. Having Speed and Strength, is no subsitute for nous and intelligence, and amazing defense through structures and systems. Would pick Smith over anyone in NZ any day.
If it depends on their Tight 5 the AB's will win nothing - they are not good enough. The saving grace for the AB's have been their loose forwards and their backline dominance that win tests for them.
In the game this morning the Tight 5 showed some dominance - but will the same lo show anything in tests to come? They must hope SA selects a Tight 4 combination otherwise the AB's will not make the grade up front. Meyer is stupid enough to do just that.
If you believe the AB Tight 5 is good enough - you are welcome to do so. However, they are NOT in my book and the reason why the opposing teams is that they do not use the good balls they get properly - their backlines and consequently ball usage are deficient.
This happened regularly when the AB's play the Springboks - in virtually all tests the Springboks got 60% of ball possession and the AB's 40%, but the AB's win virtually all the tests. It is because they have the supreme loosies and backline superiority.
However, the AB's were lucky today because the Samoans do not have the strongest forwards around. If they were stronger up front - it would have been a different story.
I do not think it was the strongest AB side imaginable. If I had to choose a team on present performances it would eb the following:-
15 Ben Smith14 Charles Piutau13 Conrad Smith12 Ma'a Nonu11 Savea10 Carter 9 Aaron Smith 8 Read 7 McCaw ( I prefer Savea, Cane and even Todd ahead of McCaw) 6 Kaino 5 Sam Whitelock 4 Retallick 3 ?????? 2 Cole 1 ??????
The props - they are all insufficient and any two would be questionable.
"in virtually all tests the Springboks got 60% of ball possession and the AB's 40%,"
Wrong, very wrong. The possession the AB had in the last 3 years against the boks:
2012 RC New Zealand 21 - 11 South Africa Possession NZ 49%
South Africa 16 - 32 New Zealand Possession NZ 45%
2013 RC New Zealand 29 - 15 South Africa Possession NZ 52%
South Africa 27 - 38 New Zealand Possession NZ 42%
2014 RC New Zealand 14 - 10 South Africa Possession NZ 61%
South Africa 27 - 25 New Zealand Possession NZ 49%
which gives an average 49,67% of possession. This means that both boks and AB had 50/50 possession.
But no matter what the reality is, you'll stick with your tale that the AB tight 5 is BS, specially the props.
Well, the AB tight 5 is the best in the world. Not only because their set pieces are at the same level as the bests (Argentina, England or SA) but also because their all around game is the best by far and here the diference with the bok props , whose all around game is practically non-existant, is huge. If you want to know how the props should play, watch last year's june internationals AB-England. O. Franks and Woodcock gave some masterclasses, specially in the last of the 3 matches ands was recognized by all the analysts.
And the rest of the tight 5 is also btwin the bests. Coles is in the top 3 with du Plessis and Creevy.
Whitelock and Retallick are simply the best 2 locks in the world. Etzebeth was also there untill last year but since his injury he didn't prove that he deserve to be there. With J. Broadhurst (the best lock ball carrier of the last SR) on the bench that AB trio is no doubt the best in the world.
He was injured for most of the SR campaign but everybody wants to crucify him. The whole AB team had a rusty first match of the season and everybody is demanding his, and only his, axe of the team.
Firstly, no conclusions can be made from yesterday's match (except possibly that Samoa is going to be a very hard team coming the WC). Many AB incumbents were missing and, as always, the AB, but all the AB, had a very rusty first match.
And I recomend to everybody who is saying that Dagg lost his mojo to watch the 5 SR games he played this year. He was outstanding, he was at his best form, he was the best saders' backline player. Yes, better even than Nadolo (who got his best form when Dagg was injured).
He was statistically the second best FB, only after Folau. But stats are not the only measure, while Folau could be the best ball carrier, Dagg's tactically positioning, overall playmaking and specially counterattack playmaking was far better. He's still the best tactical kicker in the world, something very important for a WC.
My AB backline would be:
9. A. Smith 10. D. Carter
12. Ma'a Nonu 13. C. Smith
11. J. Savea 14. B. Smith 15. I Dagg
21. TJ Perenara 22. C. Slade/B. Barret 23.SBW/Naholo
I didnt watch the game but it would no surprise that a bent ref gave them many a goalable penalties. Hahahahhahahahaha
Clearly the wee abs lack depth. Wonder how much better their best side is? Not much better I would hazard.
