Ok...
Many posters on here previously gave their individual opinions on the Springboks chances of winning this world cup and at what stage they think the Springboks would exit this world cup if they did.
After three games of mixed reviews, I think it's pertinent to revisit this issue and post updated opinions.
Please.... do not say if this particular side, or if this specific player is in the team blah blah blah, because to me that is just your "Out" / "Excuse" if you get it wrong.
Simple answer needed please.... With this current chosen squad, irrespective of who plays in the team on any given day.... can the Springboks win this world cup, and do the posters who predicted an early exit still stand by that prediction.
It's now time to put your money where your mouth is and post your final prediction

I think we still have a good chance and the loss against Japan might have even improved our chances, by galvanizing the team, but we would have had a better chance if we had a more experienced 10, 12, 13, but I'm content with how things panned out. Solid chance, but it looks like Aus and NZ have better odds. Gonna be fun seeing what happens.

If we survive the USA game and end top of the log - the next game depends entirely on whom Meyer selects for the game.  If Matfield and Jannie is anywhere near the game we can write our chances in the quarters off.  The Welsh tight 5 will destroy our tight 5 like they did in the last two games we played against them.
The whole issue centers around selections - the Matfield scenario in particular is destructive.
I just was in the garden when Max Baise came around - remember him, he was a test referee in the 1970's, his brother was one too.  He asked me about this afternoons rugby and added he is glad that Matfield is not in the team today.   He said we lost against Japan - because some of the older players lack the pace to be competitive anymore,  Interesting observation from him.
Depending on the selections our chances against the AB's would be 60:40 in their favour.  Again if the passengers are selected we must forget about winning the game - our chances would be reduced to 10%.

Ah shit, I might have got that wrong, forgot that Matfield will probably return for the Wales game, if so, I am sticking to my original call being that Wales will beat us in the QF

So I retract my statement above and say we will lose the QF as I originally predicted.

But this is only if Matfield is selected ahead of the impressive Lood

 Dave
Matfield is famous in turning our Tight 5 into a Tight 4 and loafing around in the backline to make some poor tackles if players come his way.   That is the some total of his contributions - hence my comments above.  Put him in the team and we are a goner trying to play the game with 14 players and a passenger.

Well it has done wonders for New Zealand Dave! Are you going to tell them how stupid they are too?
To the OP: Yes, this team can go all the way, even beat Australia. But they need to select wisely for each opponent. I have Lood for Wales, as I want as much punching power as possible to put the clamp of their predictable power game. If we can dominate Wales there, the backs will be the difference in the scoreboard... if Damian holds up on defence.
For the rest of the time we will need Vics all round game and mobility. The England loss is a warning of wait will happen if we lose mobility against them.
Overall, if the Boks do not make it to the semis, and providing we do not see a repeat of the ref match fixing, they will have sold themselves short. But they have got to pitch up physically and play with intensity for entire games. Meyer must emphasize that and be hard on them to keep the players focused and physically charged. One thing about being tough in the players, it puts the body in a different state of being where the central nervous system increases its recruitment of total muscle tension: more strength, more recovery and more alertness and higher tolerance to pain. I think Meyer can be a bit soft on them.

Well difference is, the Kiwi's have two physical locks who are adept at playing the ball, just like Etzebeth, Lood, du Plessis and PSDT are.

Whitelock at 116kg and Retallick at 122kg are hardly little lightweights who don't add muscle to the engine room. Therein lies the difference. Matfield sells us short in the engine room. Is a liability in the scrums, adds to grunt to the rucks or mauls, is not capable of clearing players away or imposing himself physically on the charge or in the tackle.

All he can do is hang about, make the odd open field tackle, join the line and throw a pass, take his share of the line-outs and kick-offs and that's where it ends.

When Lood and Eben run into players, they bust through them or carry them a few yards. When they tackle they smash players backwards......and then you see Lood in full flight with those two breakaway tries he has scored......these kids have it all......physicality and skill......even more so than the Kiwi's

New Zealand select their locks based on mobility, they always have. That's why they are less physical than ours, because forwards being used around the field is a very big part of their game. So much so that it's almost unique just to them. Retallick is not the most physical lock, you cannot gauge strength by weight Dave. Even if Even lost 10kg, he would still be stronger than Ret.

I also said it did not depend on who was chosen, but that these selected players could win it.
Now..... even those who said it was a pathetic side and the Springboks would never get far at all, are now saying only if this player plays, or if this team is selected.
As I said, stop mentioning that s..h..i..t...... either front up or stop making a statement.
Will this selected Springbok team go all the way and win this world cup.
Yes or No only, stop making potential excuses like " Oh, I said they could win, but only if this player was selected, or if this combination was used".

No we are going to go out if the wrong selections are made.  I made a very clear statement about the issue and yes and no is not the answer.   If I say No and Meyer select the best players available - then I would be wrong.  If Meyer picks duds - we have no chance - that is the long and the short of the story.

DA catch a fucking wake up.....the outcome depends on the 15 selected on the day not the squad of 31 as a whole. Surely that is bloody obvious.

How can I say given the squad selected we can win the WC when that is so dependant on the 15 selected.

Its easy to change ones mind as midway through the WC we still had Jean, Pienaar, Jannie and Matfield playing.....suddenly without these hasbeens, we are looking far better......but hell knows what happens next week when clueless Meyer restores useless Matfield for instance and the wheels come off.

So stop fucking banging on about fronting up when you fucking have 31 variables and only 15 you can select

The whole squad selection is an unholy mess and the result of poor squad planning by Meyer.   The dependence on players who have not played for up to 14 months, or when they did play were below par in performance, is really a bad joke.
The Springboks have zero chance of getting past the quarterfinal.

I know what is going to happen in the WC - we will not survive the quarterfinal and the players Mozart will blame will be those who perform better and the real let-downs that he favours will not be mentioned at all by him.

Hugh Bladen is absolutely right -there are too many over the hill reputation players in the squad and we are going nowhere fast in this WC.

RE: World Cup predictions: Which team will win? - "Expert" opinons
September 17, 2015, 20:00:18

The flop of the competition - easy.  Meyer's squad of rugby geriatrics and especially JP Pietersen, Victor Matfield, Willem Alberts, Fourie du Preez and Jean de Villiers - the latter three because of no or very little game time in 2015 and when they did play - they were way below par.

What is absolutely certain is that SA has no chance of being anywhere near to winning the trophy.

And then good ole Davey Boy, making bold statements about the whole squad..... but now it's about the individuals selected

Let me ask you this
Did you, or did you not say, that you would play 7 other players instead of Habana? .
You then ended this statement by saying you would keep Habana, only for experience reasons, not for form reasons.
Did you, or did you not say, that you would play 3 other players instead of Paige?.

You see.... I maintain that you did previously say this, and because you did say this, the inference made, is that you would choose 10 other players combined before these two here, therefore surely you think they are useless?
Please advise me here, I'm sure you can understand my confusion

Sunshine, do you think that inferences somehow carry weight......I have no issue selecting Habana, would he have been my original choice - no would I potentially select him for the experience factor - yes......but having said that given Habana's form this WC, it looks to me like the old man has something left in his tank.

My calls were made prior to the WC when Habana had not featured much and did nothing of note when he did.

By the way, where did I say that 15 players would not make my squad? Kirchner, Habana, Mvovo, Jean, Morne, du Preez, Pienaar, Paige, Jannie, Brits, Matfield, Schalk, Louw and Alberts make 14......with Serf replacing Jean taking it to 13. Are you lying again?

All three 9's would have featured on my list of non selections, therefore I have no choice but to select one of them, even though 2 are has beens and one at best solid.

The only players that would have made my squad are Willie, JP, Kriel, de Allende, Pollard, Lambie, Beast, Nyakane, Coenie, Malherbe, Bismark, Strauss, Etzebeth, Lood, PSDST, Kolisi and Vermeulen.

I could always live with Schalk and Habana, who have both proven their worth. Serfontein coming in for Jean was a plus for me.

So given my choices, I am left short at 9 and wing really.......but Habana is in business for now.

Reality dictates that du Preez and Schalk would play ahead of Paige and Kolisi, given their lack of game time. With tighthead, I'd risk the gamble of lack of game time ahead of selecting Jannie

My point exactly Dave, and you just clearly proved it right here
You said earlier that if you picked your 15 of the 31 available, your team would easily win it, and Meyers team wouldn't
Yet.... you are forced to pick players that you previously said shouldn't even be at this world cup, but because they are now in your team, they are good enough to win it
7 players preferred by you, before Habana
3 players preferred by you before Paige
You say your calls were made prior to the World Cup..... yeah, well so were Meyers
See the irony in all this

No dumbass......the fact that I have to pick a player like Habana whom I rate is hardly going to handicap my side now is it?

I was left dry at 9...........with 13 of my picks on board.....I would have been sailing......it would not have comprised an ideal 15, but 13 I can live with.

Meyers calls on Kirchner, Mvovo, Jean, du Preez, Pienaar, Paige, Jannie, Brits, Matfield, Louw and Alberts were never going to bare fruit during the WC........I cant say the same about Schalk and Habana.....they always had the potential to deliver more.

You don't have a point at all......your pathetic little request is flawed, for limiting our calls to the squad selection as a whole, leaves one out in the cold.

Your only real option is to say we wont get past the QF's if its the squad as a whole we need to make a call on.

However if my side from the squad was selected, I's say we could win the WC without a doubt, but you don't afford me that luxuary.

Eish Dave,
This discussion originally started by me requesting what this squad will do at this world cup
I made that very very clear to begin with... no individuals..... this squad
YOU, turned it into individuals
So in other words, I already gave you what you are requesting above here a long time ago, that is why this thread is titled "Second Opportunity"
You seem to have conveniently forgot that

You have given me nothing.....its still the same stupid question and given its stupidity, my answer remains the same.
