Ruan f***ing Pienaar!!!!!! Can't believe Matfield is there! A lthough I am not surprised. And Jannie 5 years past it Du Plessis!!
But Pienaar!!!!! FFS!!
Otherwise not bad! Glad Kriel is at 13, lord knows we need a decent 13! Hopefully he can make it his own.

I cannot understand why Malherbe - by far the best Super 15 tighthead - is not playing and the useless Jannie du Plessis is.
The other poor selections are Pienaar, Du Plessis, Matfield and Pietersen. I have given the reasons for that elsewhere in another thread.
By the way I think that Koch is given a chance from the bench here to see whether he can adjust to higher level play. He better play his heart out and show his best side.
I also like the selection of Kriel at 13 and assume that when De Villiers come on he will be replacing Kriel - so Kriel must also try his utmost to impress all of us.
Bluebok, I agree with you about Faf as well.
I just want to remind members that the game is not a test and the players are not awarded Springbok caps for the game.
08 Jul 2015, 12:49#5
Some fairly exciting selections here. I hope the centres can click and create some nice breaks. We really need J.P to find some form.
In a way I'm hoping some of those forwards struggle so their younger counterparts get selected.
Prediction: The Springboks to win, scoring 3 driving mall tries, not creating much in the backs and making far too many handling errors.

There is another problem in that team selection - we have two relatively inexperienced centers in the team. I hope Matfield does not moonlight as a center and bugger up the two real centers. He has one that in years gone by and caused serious backline disruption in the past.

I tried to get hold of Malherbe's father to find out whether he is injured - but could not get hold of him. However, there was no injury report in the newspapers and there would have been one if he was. My own guess is Meyer is keeping Malherbe back for the tests to follow and wants to have a look whether Jannie is as useless as he was in Super 15 and whether Koch could move up to higher level.
The flop selections are those identified by me. Your prejudice against Whiteley, Lambie and Reinach is a joke in bad taste and I assume you want to see the Stade Francais bench player - useless as he is - in the team 23 for Saturday.
I think Kriel will be watched with great interest at 13 and I assume he will be given 60 minutes in that position with the last 20 minutes reserved to see whether De Villiers are getting back into match fitness. You must have a pain in the backside because of the selection of De Allende at 12 and Desert Disaster will have a fit about it.
By the way Meyer is learning a hard lesson in selecting players on reputation - both Fourie and Alberts seem to be on the way out. No losses those two. Next to go should be the utterly hopeless Matfield.
08 Jul 2015, 16:00#11
Good team, except for Pienaar who is so average. Says a lot about Meyers opinion of Reinach / Faf that they aren't starting.
Nice to see a little out of the box thinking with Kriel at 13. Agree with Moz and wish the Bulls had played him there. Regarding the other Kriel (Jaco), would love to see him at wing. Plenty of pace, sheds defenders like a bad habit, great defender especially against the bigger wingers (certainly better than any other option at 14). Would be like a Rob Horne on steroids.
Will be an interesting game to watch, especially to see how Whiteley and JDV go and also the type of game plan employed.
Kitshoff hurt, or a victim of BE?

Kitshoff had a knee injury and it out for three to 4 weeks. So he could not be selected.
Insofar as Pienaar is concerned Meyer actually puts down the reputation players and then start to think about who to add. It is only when reputation players like Fourie and Alberts are totally out of question that he would pick somebody else.
08 Jul 2015, 17:20#14
Moz why do you keep spelling Warren's surname incorrectly? If it's a joke I don't understand it? And if it's an honest mistake then I'm surprised you haven't realised sooner, no offence.
08 Jul 2015, 17:28#15
We'll win this match but I'm worried about Meyer's choice of Reinach over Faf. Whilst I'm annoyed at the fact that Pienaar has been chosen to start, it negates the attacking intent/ability of the Pollard - De Allende - Kriel combination due to his slow service, I'm not surprised Meyer chose him.
That looseforward trio is looking good and I hope Meyer uses Schalk as a sub for Louw or Coetzee and not Whiteley, same can be said of Mohoje who I hope replaces Matfield rather than Etzebeth who needs game time to pick up as much form as possible.
I read in an interview that De Villiers will replace Kriel rather than De Allende, I'm the fence with that decision.
Malherbe not starting has annoyed me, I've been calling for Jannies exclusion since early 2013 and in the 2013 EOYT we were much better off with Malherbe and Coenie.

For the info of all members who asked about Frans Malherbe not playing on Saturday - I spoke to his mother and she confirmed what I wrote previously - he is going to play against the Aussies and they want to give the questionable props a chance to show who should be his back-up prop in the Aussie test.
Shezza
I think that the selection of Pienaar was a serious mistake and should much rather have gone with the Reinach-De Klerk combination. That would ensure a faster service to the backline.
I am looking forward to the center combination of De Allende - Kriel. I think what Meyer's ultimate objective is to use the center combination of De Villiers and De Allende and I think that when Kriel is replaced by De Villiers, Meyer might move De Allende to 13 or he may even try De Villiers at 13.
Mozart does not rate Whiteley and he does not care a hoot about spelling his name correctly.

Malherbe is in constant with his parents and what they tell me is normally on the button.
Interesting enough they told me previously that their son attended the marriage of Goosen on 7 February this year and they said that Goosen's problem is that he refuses to enhance his knowledge of French thus becoming proficient in French. They also said that he is too expensive for the Stormers to contract.

Interesting selections, I still don't know why Meyer is still selecting JP. he has no pace and can't tackle anymore.
De Allende deserve his spot at 12 based on pure form. he has been knocking on the door for some time now. I think that Serfontein has had his chance.
Like the idea of Kriel at 13, he played their last year in the currie cup before being shifted to fullback. Great talent and wait to see him combine with De Allende.
Not sure what to make of Pienaar. He seems to play really well for Ulster but then completely flops. Would like to see how good his service and tactical kicking fairs.
The best 9 in the world right now is Aaron smith. He controls the game really well from the base of the scrum. Really quick with his passing, pin point kicking and fantastic sniper. Not sure if Pienaar comes close in all three. If I have to rate our 9's against aaron I would score them as follow
Pienaar - Passing Accuracy 6, Breakdown clearance 6, Kicking 7, Sniping 3FafDeKl - Passing Accuracy 7, Breakdown clearance 8, Kicking 5, Sniping 8Reinach - Passing Accuracy 4, Breakdown clearance 6, Kicking 5, Sniping 8
On the props I think that both Jannie and Beast has been quite pap all year and are only there on reputation, Neither has Trevor really put his hand up this season.
I think that Kitshoff, Malherbe and Koch have been the form locks this year.
I would have also fast track Senatla into the squad, the boks attacking game plan suites him to a T

Nothing intentional Shezza...I will correct the spelling in future. I watched the Pom test again recently and it underlined your point on JP's lack of pace....easily gassed by Farrell on a kick chase. Mind you he gassed Steppie before he gassed JP.
08 Jul 2015, 20:44#22
Cheers Mike on the Malherbe situation, Meyer has said that he is going to give Kriel an extended run at 13, my guess is while De Villiers plays off the bench.
Moz, flyhalves are stereotypically faster than inside centers just look at how quick Goosen is!

Wow imagine being fucking stupid enough to select Matfield as your captain.
What a pathetically conservative side.....but true to Meyer form.
I'm surprised the utterly useless de Jongh is not at 13....but don't worry Fourie will be back once he actually gets over being in the worst shape of his life.
Meyer confirms what an utterly useless coach he is.

I think that Beno is somewhat wrong on the Jannie issue. Jannie was poor in the SR tournament and is being given a chance by Meyer to see whether he can improve in the game on Saturday. What in fact is known is that Jannie is sub-par - but Meyer wants to see whether there is still something left in the tank.
Where both is right is the selection of Mohoje - he is in the game to make up the BE issue and so is JP Pietersen. Meyer made a mistake with the omission of Senatla from his original squad and now has no option - but to select Pietersen on the wing. He would rather stick with reputation than with actual performance - hence his selection of players like Matfield and Pietersen.
09 Jul 2015, 02:37#29
The Meyer bashing is out of control, not just here but in the press and other message boards.
Fact is that the team Meyer picked was unlike any other posters on this board, so everyone could pick a bone if they wanted to. Instead of having a say and pointing out where they differ, realizing that Meyer actually got the majority of the selections "right" no matter which posters team you compare it to and then moving on in the spirit of supporting your national side, some posters resort to derision, name-calling and diatribes of hate. Lame.
Case in point - Moz and Saffex disagree on just about everything, probably as polar opposite as can be on this board. But with Meyers squad he included 10 of the 15 starters Moz named in his "team with a shout" (11 if Vermuelen was healthy) and 19 of the 23 were in Saffex's "The Bok squad that should have been". The same would hold true if you compared just about any posters squad with the team Meyer named. Far more in common than different.
So lets employ some graciousness and realize this is how life is - you don't work, play or love people that share the exact same opinions as you do - but that's just how it is and it makes life cool and interesting, you don't go around calling them f*&%$#g idiots. At least I hope not

HM is a total whipping boy for a nasty crowd. No team scored more tries against us in 2014, than we scored against them. We were only out scored in one test...2 tries to 1 vs Oz. but reversed that 4 to 1 in RSA.. We have never been out of any test in HMs tenure. Our teams have always been ready and well prepped....we remain number two in world rankings.
HM and Jake White have been pilloried.....a useless bugger like Rudolph wasn't because fans were in agreement with his revolving door teams.
The problem here doesn't lie with HM.

There is indeed one problem in Meyer's selections and that is his insistence on selecting some reputation players that do not produce the goods anymore. Meyer says publicly he selects players on form - but for some players form is not a requirement.
His constant approaches to some players to come back to play for the Springboks - like the case has been iro Steenkamp, Bakkies Botha, Jacque Fourie, Victor Matfield, Juan Smith, Morne Steyn and Francois Steyn has to a substantial degree ultimately backfired because there performances have not been adequate and their selection in squads a serious joke.
My own problem is that Meyer at times does not allow players to settle into the team and replaces them with has-beens in the hope that they would do better, when in fact they did not. .
SA was outscored in tries by Ireland as well. But last year it is factual that we only managed to win 5 of the 9 tests against the top-ranked world teams and the losses were mostly the result of deficient team selection of rugby geriatrics.

Okay let's investigate your accusation. Which new player and there have been a host was dropped without justification or injury. I can think of only one case where he might have shown more patience....de Allende. But if he had then Steppie would have been dropped and the same accusation would have been made about a different player.
The floor is yours.

There are other players he dropped as well - not only De Allende. For instance he dropped Pollard in the EOYT as well. His replacement in the latter case was Lambie - which nearly gave you a fit - according to you the flopping Morne should have been the one to replace Pollard. I said in some cases - so lets leave it at that.
He was more persistent in retaining duds like the players I mentioned elsewhere and playing them time and again - even tough they flopped game after game.
Selection of players based on reputation only is abysmal and Meyer makes himself guilty of that far too often.
