Bismarck banned for four weeks22 March 2015, 18:18

Sharks hooker Bismarck du Plessis was suspended for four weeks on Sunday after kicking an opponent during his team's narrow Super Rugby victory over the Chiefs in Durban on Saturday, Sanzar said.

Du Plessis, who is likely to be part of the Springbok squad at the World Cup, was sent off after just 18 minutes for kicking out at an opponent in the Sharks' 12-11 win, a match which saw three players dismissed.

Du Plessis pleaded guilty before a Sanzar disciplinary hearing and is suspended from all forms of the game up to an including April 18.

Du Plessis's opposite number, Hika Elliot, of the Chiefs, was also shown a red card and has been given a one-week ban for an illegal shoulder charge at a ruck.

Sharks centre Frans Steyn, who made a dangerous tip tackle on Chiefs flyhalf Aaron Cruden, faces a disciplinary hearing on Monday after his early dismissal.

Du Plessis lashed out with his boot while Elliot rammed his shoulder into the back of prop Tendai Mtawarira's head to be sent off. Steyn was shown red after upending All Black Cruden and driving him head-first into the turf.

Why dont they suspend all the players in one go?
I dont care what suspension Frans Steyn gets as long as it is consistent with what NZ/OZ teams get. No mention of Messam, does he just get off with no suspension?

This story is weird.  No word about Messam and Elliot gets a one week  ban for two dangerous offences.  This is typical of Zanzar - the NZ players gets away with murder.  Anybody else gets a long ban.  Steyn is likely to get at least two weeks - for the Sharks sake longer.

Where is this citing commissioner head quarters? If South Africa fund the SuperXV, surely if itis going to be based in one country it should not be New Zealand.

Bismarck never had a test red card and this was his first red card in Super 15.   But then his red card offence was so blatant - a four week ban is called for.   I would say that Messam is a fairly clean player - but making a tip tackle and then trying to throttle a player is bizaare.
Francois Steyn collected a penalty for dangerous play and then collected a yellow card for a serious offence in the same game only two weeks ago.  He is useless in any event and a four week ban would not wash that away.

Elliot was guilty of two red card offences as Mike noted.
Secondly he charges into the prone beast twice aiming his shoulder at beasts kneck!! It wa extremely dangerous as all agreed.
Bissie has an excellent disciplinary record. However typically the nz player gets of with 1 week and Bissie gets 4 weeks. its about the ratio one expects from nz ref in pockets oaks.
Marshall gets a suspended sentence of course.
Bob I thnk we can expect messum to get off lightly and Frans dealt with severely. Who would bet against this given the appaling record of consistent bias.
The fault hower also is with SARU. These twits take it all lieing down year afte year. We generate the money so we have some clout. In any event they should be having very strong words about biased ref and this sort of things. We should not be accepting this cheating.
Beeno outraged by down under cheating!!!

Beeno, Bismarck was banned for foul play before and that is in part why he got 4 weeks now. Also, the tape shows he was not held after the tackle so the kick to the face was unprovoked. Not that a kick to the face is allowed in the game anyway. Check the tape at the 17 mins 18 seconds mark.

When was that?   Definitely not in the test where Carter got injured.   Problem is that Bismarck's contravention was so blatant and foul - no good behaviour count would have helped him.  I am happy with the 4 week ban though - he thoroughly deserves it.

Absolute rubbish. Hika Elliott's shoulder charge was barely a yellow let alone a red. Anyone who thinks that his offence even compares with Bismarck's cowardly and vic ious kick to the head is a fool. It really is that simple.

I have a bit of sympathy for Fat Fransie because as the TV ref tried to explain, it may not have been a spear tackle if it hadn't been for Reinach's contribution but fair play to the ref and the ref assistant for applying the letter of the law.

The sanctions should have been as follows:

Hika Elliott - yellow card
Frans Steyn - red card, no suspension
Bismarck du Plessis - red card, 8 week suspension

As much as I rate Bismarck as a player, I'm actually gatvol of both du Plessis brothers now. They're violent thugs who don't understand the laws of the game. Isn't there some French club who wants to take them off our hands?

Bizzie is a liability! For every good thing he does, he gives away at least one penalty or card. I know I am alone in this regard, but I rate Strauss as a better player, and would always st art him ahead of Bismarck.
Just to echo Rooi, I am tired of both Du Plessis brothers.

Elsewhere Beeno started a thread about Springbok selection.  I left out both the Du Plessis broithers and Matfield out of my recommended team. as my bench hooker I put in Armand van der Merwe.   Sick of under-performance and reputation selections.
Rooinek - I do nto agree with you about Fransie.  He was very enar to a red card offence in the Newlands game and he was yellow-carded subsequently.   There is just no justification for the lifting of a player off the ground for tackle purposes - whether another player is involved or not.
Fransie should be given a clear warning - the way he plays now is just pure BS.  He missed as many tackles as he made and what he is doing is to compensate for that is making dangerous tackles.  Just not acceptable at all.

Not saying the card was wrong, just saying there were some mitigating factors in that both Ryan Kankowski and Cobus Reinach were part of the same tackle.

As you know, I'm not a big fan of Fat Fransie and if he gets a suspension then I hope Andre Esterhuizen gets an opportunity and grabs it with both hands!

He's emotionally immature.

Besides, he used to be the world's best ... not anymore ... haven't seen him on form for 2 seasons now.

That Frog hooker in the 6N looked pretty good as well, as are Rory Best and Ross Ford. Not sure if Bismarck is even in the top 5 anymore.

Leave him to focus on his game.

He's game has suffered because of it.

Sometimes it works when you put the fox in charge of the hen-house (Ricky Ponting and Wayne Rooney are examples) but in Bismarck's case it's been a failed experiment.

Give P at Lambie the captaincy on a permanent basis. He may be a lot younger and less experienced than Bismarck but he's a lot more mature as a person and he's not trying to prove how tough or hard he is all the time.

Fat Fransie's red card has been rescinded after the disciplinary panel agreed that Cobus Reinach played a significant part in the spear tackle. In their words . . . "the intervention of his teammates applying additional and external forces to the dynamic tackle situation resulted in what the referee deemed to be a breach of Law 10.4 ".

Pretty much what I was saying above. Glad to see reason and common sense prevail.

Pure logic raises a huge question mark...the fact that the Sharks won against the best franchise in NZ without these 2 clowns must raise a huge question...obviously we can do without them...they are must be a liability and not an asset....surely it's as clear as daylight...a revelation in fact

A blessing in disguise because it shows huge weaknesses somewhere and there are better solutions out there. You don't need to be a rocket scientist to work that out.

Frans exonerated. So Beeno proved correct re having doubts about Frans being guilty of a tip tackle due to the complication of having Reinach involved  - AS ALSO NOTED BY THE HONEST SAFFA TMO WHO STANDS FULLY JUSTIFIED AND HIS KIWI CRITICS NOT SEEN UNDER A MOUNTAIN OF EGG!
Ou maaaikie as usual has overplayed his hand re disparaging Frans! In fact it has been appaling how some oaks here have spent all their time criticising the Sharks when the chiefs were by far the worst culprits.
Lets summarise the situation:elliot starts the trouble with a red card incident followed by another shocking shoulder charge aimed at Beasts kneck - two charges made at beast. Meesum then squeals blue murder reminding the ref that kiwi players are exempt from being carded!!
Looking at the You Tube clip it appears that the leecher tackles Bissie without the ball and holds onto him too long. Very provocative stuff! Bissie flicks a foot at the twit who gets up and is off in a flash as if nothing had happened. For his reaction to this provocation Bissie gets a red.Thug Elliot having committed two separate red card offences gets a week for the second offence - a far more dangerous incident than the Bissie one that could have paralysed Beast. Then comes the Frans incident he gets a red which on review is wrong and he is exonerated. Then we have Messum in a red card incident. Verdict not yet known? Then we have Marshall kneeing Reinach in the back and gets a citation - a suspended sentence. That a knee in the back could break your spinal chors is of course of no moment - marshal being a kiwi.
Is it shameful how the saffas here spend all their time criticising Bissie when its the kiwis who are started everthing and committed far more offences. We only committed one and that after severe provocation. The kiwis should have had three palyers off the filed and us one at most. Also very patheticv was some silly oaks blaming bissie for retaliating against the show pony wee matfield who had tackled him from behing when he didnt even have the ball.matfield is behaving like a squealing kiwi who initiates nonsense and then cried like a baby when there is retaliation.
Beeno continuing to set the record right.

 Mr. been,

"when its the kiwis who are started everthing and committed far more offences."

This is exactly what 5 years old children say when they have a fight in the playground.

Everybody (jourrnalists, reporters, fans, etc) have seen Bismark's kick on the face as the dumbest and dirtiest play of the match and as an example here's what they say in the PR's "who's hot" section:

"Bismarck du Plessis: The actions of Hika Elliot and Frans Steyn weren't exactly genius, but the kick from Du Plessis on Michael Leitch of the Chiefs was phenomenally dumb. Only a four week ban? That's a surprise. It's moments like that call Bismarck's ability to captain a side into question."

But here we have Mr. Been, bringing again the bias to never seen levels, vindicating what the brainless captain(????) did and seeing red cards in every action of the chiefs players.
You are a f*cking hooligan.

Mess am guilty, but not punishedTue, 24 Mar 2015 07:49
Disproportionate to impose a sanction on the player
Chiefs captain Liam Messam's citing has been upheld after the charge was amended to an act contrary  to good sportsmanship. However, there has been no sanction placed on the All Black flank. Messam was cited, along with teammate Hika Elliot, Sharks captain Bismarck du Plessis and centre Frans Steyn, after a spiteful game in Durban last weekend. The Chiefs captain was cited after the match for tackling and gripping Sharks flank Renaldo Bothma around the neck in a ruck - the incident went unnoticed by the match officials on the day. A SANZAR judicial hearing has found Messam guilty of contravening Law 10.4 (m) Acts contrary to good sportsmanship. No sanction has been imposed on the player. The incident occurred in the 18th minute of the match. The SANZAR judicial hearing was heard by Jannie Lubbe via video conference. Adam Magro was the former professional player who attended as a judicial technical adviser.  In his finding, Lubbe ruled the following: "I reviewed the video footage, the citing commissioner's report and heard submissions from the player's counsel, Aaron Lloyd, Chiefs' head coach, Dave Rennie and the player himself. "The original charge of a breach of Law 10.4 (e) Dangerous Tackling was amended to a breach of Law 10.4 (m) Acts contrary to good sportsmanship. "Amending a charge during the course of a hearing is a power allowed to judicial officers by the SANZAR judicial rules.  "Lloyd did not object to the amendment and Messam then pleaded guilty to the amended charge. "I found the entry point to be at the lower end and after careful consideration of possible mitigating and aggravating features involved, the player's exemplary disciplinary record across a lengthy career including 134 Super Rugby matches and 42 Test matches for the All Blacks, I concluded that no further sanction should be imposed as a suspension would be wholly disproportionate to the level of offending involved in this case.  "From the video footage, it is clear that the tackle was initially legal.  "The right arm then slipped around the neck of Sharks' No.7 after they went to ground and holding on to the tackled player around his neck in such a manner puts the player in a vulnerable position. "On the particular facts of this matter and without setting a precedent for these type of actions, it would be wholly disproportionate to the level and type of offending involved to impose a sanction on the player.  "Therefore, the player is found to be guilty of Law 10.4 (m) and no sanction is imposed on the player.

So Messam is guilty, but no punishment?
If someone is cited after the game, I thought if they were found guilty they would be punished. (Ok you are guilty of murder or not paying a parking fine- but their is no punishment).
The article mentions that the "players" exemplary clean records contributed to the punishments.
Amending a charge during the course of a hearing is a power allowed to judicial officers by the SANZAR judicial rules.  The player's exemplary disciplinary record across a lengthy career including 134 Super Rugby matches and 42 Test matches for the All Blacks, I concluded that no further sanction should be imposed because it is a New Zealand player, and All Black in particular.

No wonder he has such a clean record, which can again have a positive influence on the outcome next time.
