Your understanding is not 100% correct. Walmart does sell guns but Walmart is a departmental store with a firearms dept. That does not mean that, while shopping for your groceries, you go to the guns shelf and chuck a few pistols and rounds of ammo in the trolley as well. That's also does not mean that they do not do background checks. The issue in the US is the difference between federal law and state law.

I actually understand it a lot more now than I used to.
For instance, a lot of people in the USA don't like to buy their guns from Walmart, even though they are openly available..... also, even though they are sometimes cheaper by up to $100 per weapon.
The reason why, is because the onus is then on you as the buyer of that weapon, to send the gun back to the supplier for warranty or any other repairs if the gun is faulty at any stage under it's guarantee.
Whereas purchasing through a registered gun shop, they take all the responsibility of that upon themselves, issue you with a replacement gun if faulty, and send the gun away to the manufacturer at their own cost, with an obvious premium price for these services.
A lot of people also complain that when you purchase at Walmart, you are given this "Walk Of Shame", where management or any employee of Walmart, will walk you out to your vehicle and hand the gun over to you only when you are off the premises.
Some even say that you have to put your new gun in your car before they will sell you any ammo, as some stores do not sell them together.
I have no idea how true these incidents are, but I am reading them in various different articles.
However, everywhere I have looked so far, maintains that if you do go to Walmart in general, and your paperwork is in order, and background checks work out..... you should have your gun within 40 minutes at the most.... of walking into the shop.
Different states will have different requirements, but this is the overall general information that I have read.... besides gun shows.
