The following from News 24:-

"Coach Heyneke Meyer says he will not select SA's Rugby World Cup squad on skill alone and is also looking for players with the mental toughness to carry the side through difficult moments.

He sounded a warning to his senior players that reputation will not buy them a ticket to England later in the year as he seeks to root out complacency.

"You need guys who are mentally tough. The World Cup is not always the team that wants it most...every single team out there wants it for their country," Meyer told reporters.

Coped best

"It's not always the best team (that wins). I believe World Cups are about guys who can handle the pressure because it is immense pressure."   Meyer said he had been keeping an eye on South Africa's travelling Super Rugby teams to see which players coped best in Australasia.

"It is away from home in tough conditions, especially in New Zealand, and a lot of the fringe players have put up their hands," he added.    Meyer has had more than 40 players in a pre-World Cup camp in Cape Town this week and several with little or no international experience.   It would be a risk to take them to the World Cup but Meyer said he had no qualms about doing so if he felt they would give him a better chance of victory.

Great for team

"The senior players know I have never picked just on reputation, they have to perform now and in the (Rugby) Championship. If there are youngsters pushing them who know they have a chance, then that is great for the team," he explained.

"You don't want to go in with an old side in a comfort zone knowing they will play every game and who just assume they are going to win the World Cup."

This really is the tops  - the coach who claims he never picked players just on reputation.   How does he account for the selection of a string of players like Gurthro Steenkamp, Bakkies Botha and Matfield, plus a long list of players who really has been sub-par such as Morne Steyn?

Then there is the case of "keeping an eye" on SA travelling teams in Super 15.  if he did most of the Sharks and Bulls teams failed during their tours - so will they keep their positions in the squad.

Meyer's talk reminds me of someone who regrets in the evening what he said in the morning.

We shall see. If Matfield, Bizmarck, Jannie, Jean, Du Preez and a number of others make the squad, then this whole article will be proven to be a lie!

Matfiled should never come close. Bissie if fine. Jean and Jannie could make it  and Du Preez is an unknown quantity who could well be past it.

You are most welcome on this site and it is a privilege to see your contribution above.  Clear and to the point.
I believe there are two sides attached to selection - experience and present top quality  performance.   Selection purely based on reputation and without regard to performance is an abomination.  Bismarck upped his performances very much recently and if he continues in that way he should be selected.
I am not sure about Jean de Villiers.  He is a gentleman who will not accept selection if he believes he will be letting the team down.  However, he was hot in 2013 and substantially less so in 2014.   That raises the question - what will he be after more than 8 months on the sideline.   I do not know - we will have to see.
Both Jannie and Matfield is long  overdue for retirement.   Matfield should never have come back from retirement.  He is the most physical-deficient lock in word rugby today and contributes nothing to Tight 5 play - matter of fact eh weakened that component of the game - so much so that our other Tight 5 players have to take on more work and the loosies are forced to take over the pother part o the tight work not done by Matfield - reducing the efficiency of the whole forward pack.
Du Preez has a huge question mark as to fitness hanging over his head.  If anybody goes back and look objectively at matches he played in since coming back to Springbok rugby - he would find a seesaw pattern.  The first week up the second succeeding week down.  The reason obviously relate to fitness level - in Japan matches are only played fortnightly and to play week after week is just not feasible for their club players.  The other issue is with the lack of any games between the close of the Japanese club season in March and the tests in June - this year in July.  Last year du Preez trained at home during the period and came back obviously unfit.  He produced very little in the first two games and was injured seriously in the third game - forcing him out of rugby for the remainder of the year.   Since his return in January 2015 - he played in 7 games total.   That means that since March 2014 he played only in 10 games.   Will he be fit enough to play in July after "training quietly at home" for nearly 4 months.   I doubt it very much if previous experience is taken into account.    I agree with Beeno - his selection will be a lottery ticket.

Mike, on FdP, how many games did Burger need to make a difference after his long absence and returning from Japan thereafter this season?

Burger was one case - Du Preez an entirely different one.   One has to go back to the 2013 when in the midst of the Japan season he blew in the RC hot in the first test and cold in the next one a week later, same in the EOYT.  That was followed by last year when he was  very average in  his first two games before he got injured - an indication of match fitness deficiency.
I am not saying he is not going to make the grade - but have some doubts whether that would happen and would not put money on it.   After all the guy is getting older and according to Jean - he has to work twice as hard on his fitness to maintain what he was when he was two or three years younger.

Better than a team of Lappies, Loods, Jordaans, fragile Stephanies, bang Goosens, chicken Jantjies and slow Stepfonteins. Let's have the pros.

Mozart
The worst you can get is a team of losers like De Jongh, Fransie, Morne, Alberts, Matfield, Jannie and co.   The above-mentioned players by you are at least rugby players - my list comprise loafers and incompetents.   At least four of my list is well past their sell-by date.

Oh sure Lappies has made more ccontributions to the Boks than Alberts....Lood has done more than Victor....Goosen has done more than Frans.

None of the players you attacked has been in the losing side in the 2011 RWC and since Matfield's return to test rugby - the Springboks has become the bunnies of the top ranked countries in world rugby.   Your reference here is BS in the extreme in any event.  Nobody denies that some of the players you mentioned did well in the past - but they are bloody hopeless at present.
Steyn is one of the worst performing centers in Super 15 and Alberts was never a great - but was hyped up by some.  Matfield is the main reason why our Tight 5 have been destroyed in recent tests.
Any half-decent players are at present better than those three - whether they have been in test rugby or not.   None of them would even be in the squad of any of the top six nations in World Rugby other than amongst Meyer's losers.

Blah, blah blah.......almost every expert rates Victor, Frans and Alberts. Nobodies vs great players. You are a silly fellow, a stubborn fellow,  so confident you are right despite not a shred of evidence in your favour....funny stuff.

What experts are you talking about as to rating Victor, Frans and Alberts?  Victor has been the key to the collapse of the Bulls this year, Fransie is about the 30th on the list of centers in Super 15 this year, Alberts did not have a decent match since 2011.  They thrive on reputation and at present is absolutely worthless in performance.  Funny stuff.

What list of centres? Let me guess the list based on those funny stats you produced the other day.  Give up you old coot, you don't have a clue.

Easy to determine.  In SA alone the following has been better than Steyn at 12.  De Allende, Venter, Serfontein, Vorster and Odendaal.  All have been better than Fransie both in attack and defense.  So start looking at other franchises and you would find the list getting longer and longer.

All based on numbers...and numbers which I have shown are hopelessly inconsistent with  the best numbers from ESPN.

The inconsistency you mentioned are a figment of your imagination - because I used a given set of norms - you use selectively one set to deal with one player.  When I in the past provided info from ESPN on the performance of Fransie at 12 - you mentioned that Fransie is good - but it is not reflected in statistics.
This year Fransie made 1 clean line break beating 8 defenders (that according to ESPN) and his missed tackle ratio was above 26% (also based on ESPN) - so what makes him better than the centers mentioned.  He cannot compete if numbers are used - he cannot compete if the performances on the field are used - so what makes him comp etitive?  A figment of your imagination perhaps?

I would rather quote amateur stats (which it is not) than the supreme idiot you are.   In this case the absic approach of the various stats differ in what they regard as line breaks.   So all the other players are left as it is and you ruin off to ESPN to support one of your standard dunce players.  If you wanted to compare apples with apples you should do what you did iro of all the players mentioned in that thread - which you did not do.
I would rather use the so-called "amateur stats for dummies" - than be as dishonest as you are about using ESPN stats.
