This sound too much like a fairy tale to me, It is likely that we will have to wait until a book is written by somebody on the inside to get clarity on the issue, I believe
that the situation in fact is that Meyer got scared away from splitting the Etzebeth - De Jager lock combination and told Matfield he will not start with him and instead play him from the bench, Matfield suddenly claimed leg muscle stiffness as an excuse not to be involved at all - even though over the weekend he claimed that he is fully recovered.
Matfield is an egocentric person. After the departure of De Villiers he assumed the captaincy would automatically pass to him and that - if fit - that would automatically lead to his selection to the starting line-up. It must have come as a rude awakening to him that he will not be captain if he has to play off the bench and that Du Preez will remain as captain and Burger as vice-captain. Worse still was the fact that he is being replaced by De Jager because the latter is at present a better player than he (Matfield) is.
I indicated previously that Meyer split the De Allende - Kriel center combination \ which partly accounted in the minds of elements in SA Rugby for the Japan disaster, The fact is I do not think anybody was very happy after that loss and the pressure on Meyer was mounting. If he went ahead and split the Etzebeth - De Jager lock combination and the Springboks lose the game against Wales - he would be out of a job quicker than quick If he played them the effect of a loss would not necessarily lead to a similar degree of pressure. Most people know that De Jager is a much better player Than matfield - hence my remarks in the preceding paragraph.
