Wave fond goodbye to JJ as he disappears into obscurity....a superb athlete, but not a rugby player. And then there is Step....a decent rugby player but an inferior athlete. Not fast, elusive or strong .....he has no weapons to hurt test opposition. In the junior game his Ettienne Botha, Wynand Olivier inside step worked.....in senior rugby is just guarantees a huge hit from a loosie.

He too will amount to nothing in test terms.

He amounts to more than most of your present favourites do.   Morne is slow without a step (fact is slower than a carthorse) - fat Fransie is slower than Morne and has also no step.  Fourie has no step and is slower than even Fransie and same is JP Pietersen.
Your weird rating of player performances is such a joke that I enjoyed this one particularly.
Now I know what will come - the players I mentioned were good in the past - but it is not the past that we should hang onto - it is the present that makes your support of has-been players so funny.  Not that Morne ever was a has-been - he was a never-has-been who could kick reasonably well at goal, but even then goes to pieces when under pressure.
I do not necessarily think that Serfontein is really the top center we have in SA - but he is a good player - not the rubbish you spin about him.

I guess you arent going to defend your world beating combination of Step and JJ? The combination you assured us was the future of Bok rugby.....Step better than Jean, JJ better than Danie?

Do you finally see how incredibly stupid it all was?

Well last I checked Serfontein was firmly in Meyer's plans......it was your hero Meyer who thought the world of him last year, despite playing him out of position at 13......where did you suck it from that Serfontein was going anywhere?

As for JJ, you are lying once again, something you have become quite good at.....when have I EVER said that JJ was better than Danie huh? Why lie about this......be man enough to answer?

Nope I did not say anything of the sort......I said JJ's performance with ball in hand against NZ was the best we have seen since the days of Danie.....that is ALL I have said and I stand by that........so in effect you lied.

As for Serfontein being better than Jean......damn right he is, he has achieved far more than Jean did aged 21 and his mark on the game will be better than Jean's as he has a better skill set than Jean......I stand by that.

Jean was good in his day, his day is long gone. Serfontein is better aged 21 than Jean was at the same age, starting with his JWC player of the tournament award and elevation to test status soon thereafter and where he has played ever since.

Saying he is "going" to be better is not saying he is better.  The one foresees a future situation - what you said is a supposition he is better than Gerber at the time of writing.   A fine point - but really not the same thing,
However, what Dave wrote was two years ago and circumstances have changed since then.   Why stick to the past scenario when what is at present the situation and what would the most beneficial future situation requires.

Nonsense Moz, Taute had half a hand in one NZ try and JJ has had half a hand in one Bargie try.

JJ is by far our best prospect at 13, in fact the best I have seen since Gerber. Taute is a quality player and if JJ was not available, Taute would be my option at 13.

I am hoping that some of the other young 13 prospects come through like Pat Howard, Dries Swanepoel, Tyler Fisher and Stokkies Hanekom. Players like de Allende, Rohan Janse v/Rensburg and 19 year old Esterhuizen of the Sharks might also better be suited to 13 as they are all currently employed at 12.

This Mozart turned into a d\discussion on Dave - noit on the topic he started.   I am also not happy about the misinterpretation Mozart stated as a fact in the case of what Fave wrote.
If he really want to be taken seriously he should have quoted the input Ceradyne in fact quoted.  Mozart love to quote inputs of others if he thinks he can score points - in this case he tried to score points without quoting it because his argument would have fallen  flat and in fact he was guilty of serious misinterpretation - not nice since it leaves a bad taste.

I still think you should apologize about the allegation as to the JJ/Gerber issue - you totally misrepresented the issue.
On the issue of Serfontein I seriously believe he is not as bad as you make him out to be - neither as good as Dave claim he is.   He is a good player on the whole - but whether he is the best center we have at present is debatable.  I myself does not see him as a certainty candidate for the Springbok team at present.
Serfontein showed a massive amount of promise on Under 20 level and was deservedly the player of the series in the JWC in 2012.   My own feeling is his further development was stunted by him being in the Bulls team as a center - since the Bulls have a game plan that destroys center play and players.
Be it as it may Serfontein was out-performed by Vorster in the 2015 SR tournament and that leaves a question mark about his present and future development as a player.

What this clearly demonstrates is that you have no appreciation for the reality of modern day test rugby, where much of the ball the 12 recieves is in traffic. In traffic a 12 has to take contact and not pass the ball......you will find the same stats apply to Jean, SBW, Nonu and co when they play 12.

Your ignorance to reality is astounding - with your pathetic stats providing no context, one would swear test rugby was played in space and that a 12 enjoyed the luxuary of running free. Get a grip man.

As the reports on Frans in those tests clearly state - he was a huge physical presence and was sorely missed in that last test against England that we ended up drawing.

You know stuff all Mike, especially when it comes to the reality of modern day centres and their roles in test rugby.........we have long moved on from the Danie Gerber days

Clearly Sapp thinks Danie Gerber was the best, but rugby has past him by....JJ he rates as the best since Gerber. But given Gerber is clearly part of a prior era in Sapps pea brain.....logic dictates for modern rugby he rates JJ higher.

Sapp also thinks Mike is a fool, something which is hard to disagree with....
Once again it's game, set and match.

What you said was not really what Dave implied - you said he rated Engelbrecht as better than Gerber - which was not the case.
I take Dave's attacks with a pinch of salt and a laugh and do not really care what eh keeps on saying.
However, did you read what I said about Serfontein myself.  I do not agree with Dave on his assessment and clearly said so - but I also do not agree he is a bad player like you make him out to be.   He did not develop to the extent I hoped for in the past and that remains a fact of life.

Tokkie ...on Step I have often said he is probably going to be like Wynand...a good provincial player. But I have said at test level he is toothless against top teams. Which is true. How can I be wrong stating the truth?
On JJ let me help you grasp the logic.
1) Dave said JJ is the best centre since Danie Gerber.
2) But he said that Gerber's time has passed.
Simple logic implies 1 plus 1 equals two. So either Sapp's logic is totally faulty, or he believes for the modern game JJ is the man. No need to apologize, just be more careful next time, too much crow can be bad for you.

The inside step is more than just a mindless step. We are getting into running lines here. The unders line has the greatest potential to create space from 12. Nonu does it all the time for NZ. Damian's first instinct is to attack the outside shoulder.

I think the worst two centers we had were 2012 were in fact JJ and Frans Steyn.  Both  have one element in common - like Jorrie Muller they have no step whatsoever, running straight at the first defender and getting tackled with ease.   The problem is a bit eased by Engelbrecht because he has pace and worsened by the fact that Steyn has no pace to speak of either and clumsy as well - making him a worse center than Serfontein by the proverbial mile.  This is proven by the fact that  Steyn is worse than Serfontein in defense as well, since he has much less pace than Serfontein as well.
However, while Serfontein slips out of tackles from time to time - neither Engelbrecht or Steyn has that ability.   That in effect is confirmed by the fact that Steyn since 2012 has the worst line and tackle break as well as the worst ball carry gain distances  stats of any center in SA.
I do not think that Engelbrecht is up to standard and has been pointing out that he is disappointing and should have remained on the wing where he was better as a player because of his pace - a center he is not.   Serfontein on the other hand is forced into playing a playing style foreign to his physical abilities.   This was augmented by the fact that initially he had a donkey- style flyhalf (a Morne Steyn clone) in Potgieter  and when Pollard was brought in he was more often than not injured and out of the game.   I have not given up on him yet and with Pollard as flyhalf he would do better.
De Allende - your take on him is so stupid and contrary to fact that it is best ignored.    SB Williams is one of the best centers in world rugby and De Allende is better than him - so what BS are you spreading?

Why do you always go for Serfontein and support Frans Steyn - when Fransie has had a worse performance record over the last three Super 15 tournaments than Serfontein had?  After all - Plumtree ended up saying Steyn is no center - no c oach ever said that of Serfontein.

 Desert Disaster
I laughed outright when reading the following:-
'Frans creates space, has a good kicking game, has a long pass off either hand, can smash through the gainline, and also is a highly effective decoy. These are not opinions these are facts."

Lets look at the last sentence first.   FACTS means that their should be some sound basis applicable in this case.  One of the sound basis to support any factual statements should be supported by statistics and actual impact in games.   In the absence of supporting practical example and statistical data - any opinions making general unsubstantiated statements means nothing other than personal opinions.
No lets look at the facts iro of Frans Steyn as reflected in games:-
*   Frans creating space just does not happen - there is no examples where he has created space this year in any game he played in.  For players to create space a player need to draw in defenders,  beat tackles and off-load balls efficiently in the process.   Fransie did nothing of the kind.   He was in fact so poor in this over the past three years - hsi coach called him no center at all.   He has the worst attacking record of any 12 in SA in Super 15 over the past 3 Super 15 Tournaments.  FACT - not fiction.
*   Frans has a good kicking game  This is a joke - since Frans is noted for his inaccurate kicking which caused large numbers of possession losses (32 in 2014 Super 15) and the majority of his kicks is senseless and without any objective in mind.  It was kicks like that that caused his downfall in 2013 and his disastrous kicking in 2014.
*    Frans cannot read games and consequently make skip passes when it should not happen.   He has also a tendency to be inaccurate in passing of the ball.
*    Smash through the gainline - give me one example where it happened in Super 15 since his return from France.  This guy has the worst line break record of any 12 in SA in 2013, 2014 and 2015.   In 2013 it never happened once.  Last year it happened once in all games played.  This year it also happened once.  That is the worst case of any 12 in SA in "smashing through the gain line"   If it happened then I would like to know when and where it happened.   *   I have never seen Fransie being a decoy runner - he is too slow and clumsy to be one.  When did that ever happen - I would like to know.
You make 5 statements - none based on FACTS - yet you fave the audacity to state that what you say is factual.   That makes your  match descriptions and player evaluation unadulterated crap and a joke most people thoroughly enjoy.   Keep them coming  I need further reasons to laugh.

Fox has correctly pegged Frans' strengths....offload, long pass off either hand massive boot and ability to break the first tackle. He is very hard to put away. I would add one other strength, ability to see the field and react quickly.

Against weak opponents those strengths wont be that important....in  heavy duty, defence dominated games they will be crucial. Games like the RWC.

Why is it that Steyn has the worst record in Super 15 for three years now for line breaks and defenders beaten if he has the "ability to break the first tackle" and "very hard to put away".
If there is one ability I have never seen in him at center it is "the ability to see the field and react quickly".   That ability is totally absent from his play and is imaginary.   That is why he has been so unsuccessful at flyhalf and center that he killed any backline he played in since his return from France.
You once said that Frans Steyn's stats does  not reflect his real value in teams.  Why should that be?  A good player's statistics confirm his abilities - same with a poor player his deficiencies.   Steyn's stats is in fact the worst of any inside center in SA on Super 15 level - and that is a fact.  He made the least number of line breaks of any Super 15 center - he beats the least number of tackles of any such center and his ball carries deliver the poorest territory gain of any such center.
His defensive record is worse than De Allende and o n par with the poor record of De Jongh.
So what factual support can you produce other than daydreams that makes the pace-deficient Frans Steyn an acceptable center?
I want to remind you how questionable your following statement really is:-
".in  heavy duty, defence dominated games they will be crucial. Games like the RWC".
In the 2007 Steyn did not miss the tackle on Tate only - he missed three other crucial tackles as well.  Defense was never Steyn's strong point.  He has had difficulties in re-orientating his body position so as to tackle stepping players and that is why he in fact is regarded as ineffective in defense and a liability in games.  His knee problem is partly to blame for the fact that he is seemingly clumsy.
I do not expect that you will realize what a problem Frans Steyn is and what a problem he would be in the RWC - you and Desert Disaster lives in a dream world where all kind of non-existent positives are conjured up and then stated as facts.

IMO Fransie is a good player being hyped more than is justified.  He never lived up to the potential he showed back in 2007 and did very little at 12 for the Boks since then,  especially in the last 4 years.  Moz,  if performance against top flight opposition  is a prerequisite for your rating of a player,  why are you even entertaining the idea of Fransie at 12?

Frans had a good WC in 2007 at a very young age Draad. Players who are just"good" don't do that. He then was a big part in our wins over Wales and Samoa in the 2011 WC before getting injured...we lost the next test. In 2012 we beat England easily twice....then Frans  got hurt replaced by Wynand, we could only draw.  If you look at the Sharks record when he was at 10 in 2014, it was in fact better than any other team in the tournament, and dropped off when he didn't play.

He has been a winner in 38 out of 53 tests with only 14 losses....for a 72 per cent win ratio. A period where in total the Boks only won 68 per cent of their tests. The data says the Sharks and the Boks win more if Frans is playing.

This guy makes things happen in big games. It's not always obvious but he contributes to the muscle in 12 channel.  I know the French interlude didn't serve him well and perhaps de Allende can make 12 his own with a few big performances. But Frans  would still be in my match 23

I'm  not against Fransie,  but by some ill fate,  he never played much at 12 against Ozz or NZ.  He struggled with fitness in the last 3 years and he was never the first choice 12 for the Boks since he started playing.  He is too good to leave out of the squad,  but he does not deserve to be first choice... by a provincial country mile. Closer to the cigar than Wynkan,  but still no smoke.  The Danie Russouw of the Bok backline for the last 8 years.

Against the ABs/Oz Frans was a winner 8 times out of 18 for a win percentage of 44%. The Boks in total won 14 out of 38 matches against Oz/Nz in the time Frans was playing for a win percentage of 37%. In fact if you exclude Frans' matches they won 6 out of 20 matches for a win ratio of 30%

You give Steyn  credit for a win by 1 point against Wales (4th on the log in the 2011 6-Nations) and by 6 points against Samoa (one of the lower rated teams in the WC)  in a disastrous WC campaign in 2011.   The team was so weak that a loss against Australia in the quarters was a given - yet the hiding away of that fact behind the refereeing of Bryce Lawrence, is a nice escape mechanism for you.

Your description of Fransie in the tests against England in 2012 was seriously defective.  Fransie played in the first English test and showed zilch - matter of fact he was responsible for England scoring a try because of a relieving kick that rolled in the ground and the test resulted in a narrow win.  You claim he was in the second test - which he was not as he got married on the day the test was played.  He ended up in the third test in PE and together with Morne Steyn was disgustingly poor.  In any event you gave him credit for a game he never played in.
The fact is that Fransie was chronically unfit and serious;y overweight in the tests he played in is not mentioned by you.   The away test against Argentina was the same as the first test against England - a relieving kick deep in the Springbok 22 rolled along the grass and put the whole Springbok team off-sides - points to Argentina.  Be it as it may he produced zero in the away test against Australia and equally so in the AB test in Dunedin - got injured in training and never played a match again in 2012.
Subsequently he was a rank disaster in the 2013, 2914 and 2015 Super 15 tournaments - whether you like it or not.   His defence was poor throughout and his attacking abilities were non-existent.   That he was shown up badly in the game he played in against De Allende in Super 15 you will never admit.
Your advice to Draad to stop digging is childish - because Draad is just exposing the truth and you do not like it.  Your argument about Steyn in not playing in losing games is laughable.  It was a horrible team performance in those tests and Fransie was no better than the other losers - there were other players in the losing teams - like Matfield et al that you keep punting.
Mozart - you are being totally disorientated in the case of Frans Steyn and you should be honest enough to admit that he is at this stage of his career NOT a test quality player. You foolishl y claim that he is - yet factually he is NOT.

Wrong - Steyn was out in the second test - not the third.  But even if I am wrong there - he was not up to standard in the English tests and the RC tests in 2012 and piss-poor in Super 15 over the last three tournaments with the poorest attacking and defending stats of all 12's in SA super 15 franchises.   You will never admit that - but he is a disaster at 12 due to deficient reading of the game, deficient pace resulting in poor attacking in defense abilities.
Imagine a center who in two Super 15 tournaments made 2 line breaks in all matches played and beating 17 defenders in two such tournaments in which he played 25 matches and you said he is good in that regard.   What a joke!!!!!!!
