VisKop “Compare man-made laws to Moses' 10 commandments, their is no comparison” Umm…as far as i know, adulatory will lose you tons of money in court. Murder will see you go to jail and often theft will too. Bearing false witness is also not something courts apparently smile upon. Looking after your parents is still a good thing and envying your neighbour remains a road to being a bitter bitch. Seems to me, that disobeying some of the Ten Commandments also means disobeying modern laws. How does this equate to no comparison? Or are you speaking figuratively(don’t answer that, it’s a trap RE your literal interpretation of religious texts)? And disobeying most of the rest pretty much means you’re a shitty person. What you’re really trying to say is that modern law is more intricate and specific. No shit genius, we’ve only had another 3000 years + millions of scholars after the Old Testament was written to refine the law.

I noted your link above Plum….I’ll try to find the time. Off to dinner but here’s something to ponder in a similar vein. I once did a calculation myself of the likelihood of my existence, but somebody else actually published something:

‘Dr. Ali Binazir illustrates the extremely unlikely chain of events that would have to occur in order for you to be born with this example in a blog post:

Imagine there was one life preserver thrown somewhere in some ocean and there is exactly one turtle in all of these oceans, swimming underwater somewhere. The probability that you came about and exist today is the same as that turtle sticking its head out of the water — in the middle of that life preserver. On one try.

Dr. Binazir has crunched the exact numbers shown in the infographic below.

The path begins with the odds of your dad meeting your mom (1 in 20,000). This is multiplied by the chances of them staying together long enough to have kids (1 in 2,000), and so on.

The probability of you existing at all comes out to 1 in 102,685,000  — yes, that's a 10 followed by 2,685,000 zeroes!

Binazir concludes that the odds of you being alive are basically zero.’

…….

….so we don’t have to enter alternative realities to come up with infinitesimal odds of existing. Every human is very, very very lucky.

"What we remained stumped by is the transition from nothing into something."

The very basis of my point......start right there........define "Nothing". It's something I've wrestled with all of my life and I know I can't and I also believe no-one else can.

I think nothing is essentially inconceivable and almost nauseating to contemplate. And given time is infinite in both directions it can never be reached…. even the Big Bang assumes matter exists to expand. In mathematical terms nothing is a limit approaching zero, rather than zero itself.

Well, nothing is inconceivable but what is even more inconceivable is that something was created from nothing, how we'll never know.

It wasn't nothing, it was a singularity containing everything...evem more inconceivable

I agree, each person is extremely lucky to be here. Being exactly who you are is another huge luck considering the odds of one specific sperm out of billions entering the egg. Being alive is a great luck and a huge privilege. There is probably a calculation somewhere that expresses the odds for the rise of humanity as a species. I’m guessing those odds are probably also pretty small.

I think of it as though i’m AI living within a simulation. Prior to the machine being switched on to run the simulation there was nothing since the simulation didn’t yet exist. Once the simulation is switched on, time in the simulated universe begins. All the something we see is a pixelated projection and probably less “real” than the machine running it all. Just like the simulation that you might run on a computer are, in some sense, less real than the world that exists outside your computer :!

And after all those trillion to one obstacles to finally get here...... as per Coolio, "death ain't nothing but a heart beat away"

So here’s another way of looking at it….it took 2 succesful (one in a hundred) copulations to create your parents. 4 to create your grandparents. 8 to create your great grandparents..,,,2 to the power 3.  But there are probably 80 generations between you the start of the Christian Era. That means there were 2 to the power 79 copulations….just since then to produce you.

For reference 2 to the power 10 is 1024. So imagine 1024x1024x1024 x1024…..basically a trillion, multiplied by itself….so a trillion trillion. That’s a lot of screwing.

Of course there weren’t enough people on the planet to do all that copulating so there are massive redundancies in the chain…..common ancestors as it were.

And I’m not referring to the inbreeding typical of the Wallies for example, that produced a race beset by rickets….I’m talking about distant generations not cousins.

All a huge mind f….er mind copulation.

If "a" God(s) does exist, my "guess" is that it just created the blueprint for evolution(from the Big Bang to how life forms on planets).
Everything that happens after that is random chance, until intelligent life forms with the ability to influence fate.  (e.g. nuclear weapons).

Religion is just man-made stuff. Buda or Adam and Eve is not reality.
Most religious people can see this with 99.9% of religions, just not their own.

So preying - while a nice exercise is futile. Why would a God interfere with self-determination?  (e.g. God made the Springboks win the world cup etc)
