Ex Supersport

Cape Town - Following their team’s exit from the Rugby World Cup, England’s rugby bosses appear interested in the services of former Springbok coach Nick Mallett.

Current England coach Stuart Lancaster’s job appears to be under threat after his side failed to reach the knock-out stages of this year’s World Cup.

England lost at their Twickenham home to both Wales and Australia to become the first hosts of a World Cup to be eliminated in the group stages of the tournament.

Then-Italy coach Mallett was overlooked for the England job in 2011, when the English RFU opted to appoint Lancaster.

Mallett was speaking at a Blue Bulls breakfast on Thursday when he confirmed that he had received a call from England earlier this week.

But this time around he’s not interested in the job, the SuperSport pundit said.

“I’m not going to consider it. I was keen for the challenge in 2011, but not anymore. I’m enjoying my current job,” said Mallett.

Although under contract until 2020, and with the English RFU saying no hasty decisions will be made regarding the coaching role, recent media reports appear to indicate that Lancaster's time as England coach could be over.

England face Uruguay in Manchester on Saturday (kick-off 21:00 SA time) to conclude their World Cup campaign.

 Typical Mallett opportunism again................?
Nick Mallett: RFU denies England coach approach

The Rugby Football Union has denied former South Africa coach Nick Mallett's claim he was sounded out for the England head coach job this week.

Mallett was one of the candidates who lost out when current England coach Stuart Lancaster was appointed in 2012.

An RFU spokesp erson said any decision on the job would follow a review of the World Cup, adding: "No pre-judgements have been made nor anyone contacted."

Mallett said he would not consider the England job this time around.

"I was keen for the challenge in 2011, but not any more. I'm enjoying my current job," said the 58-year-old, who is now working as television pundit.

Are you claiming that Mallett lied about being sounded out for the job after which he made a public statement that he is not interested in the job?
Obviously the ERU will deny such communication - because of the embarrassment of being turned down publicly.

Mallett has done this before. Desperately trying to stay relevant. Wants everyone to know.

Are you saying that the RFU (not the ERU) lied about there not being any contact to anybody? Like o imatey said, he has done it before.

Cera, I think it more probable that England is denying than Mallet flat out lying. I'm not a Mallet fan. He is obnoxious and rude with no discretion, but has no reason to lie. It was obviously not an official enquiry from England, but unlikely to be a total fabrication.

I remember Mallett also being involved in something similar when the Sharks went behind the back of John Plumtree.
The Sharks were looking for a new coach- but they needed the current coach until the review was completed. They are running a business- so they needed to interview replacement candidates.
Surely there must be some type of confidentiality on discussions- but if Malett picked up the phone and said get lost not interested- they could not force him to not disclose he was contacted. The other option is that a journalist spoke to Mallet - and Mallett just said he was not interested- or he did lie.
It later transpired in the Plumtree saga- that Nick Mallett was in fact a candidate- but he declined.

This happened twice before when there were no positions on offer at the time, yet certain individuals stated they had been approached by the RFU to fill them. It is completely disgraceful that people act in this manner and, as such, there are no places to fill as Coach of England. Mr Lancaster is the Coach, he was given a contract for another four years pre RWC and a large number of England supporters want him to stay in charge of the Squad.
Quite frankly, behaviour such as we have seen from many this past week is completely unseemly and uncalled for. It would certainly make me draw a large red line through their names were I ever thinking of giving them a job at any time in the future.

Becs I have to agree with your assessment of the disgusting behaviour towards Lancaster ,Robshaw and the rest of the English team .Like the ABs coaches post 2007 lancaster needs to remain and build on his not inconsiderable improvements he has made .Team culture alone is years in the creation and he has done nothing to merit the vitriol he has received .I feel a bit sorry for actual Rugby supporters like yourself [ as opposed to fair weather 'fans']  and many others in England who dont see Rugby as just a social event where one goes to indulge in some nationalistic flag waving and selfie posting .

Like him or not ... he is a brilliant coach ... best we have ...

England would have done well to obtain his services.

I guess shunning him in 2011 annoyed him.

Mallett was good in some aspects of coaching, but poor insofar as his ability to identify and replace players.  He also buggered up badly in the Teichman case.
However, what amazes me is the attitude of Low Life and Ceradunce in this regard.  in this regard.   They both thrived on a newspaper report about Mallett inasmuch as he was obviously approached but declined a potential offer.
They are too dim to realize that a statement after the fact is not trying to get attention - it was merely to put matters straight.

guys mallet is the go to guy when any international team had a bad run. from a coaching perspective he is a great tv pundit but that very same skills is not what you want in a dressing room.
a coach that rode on carel du plessis's success much like jake rode eddie jones's skills in 2007.
as well the poms will never go for a south african coach.

Mallet would ahve done a great Job for England. They would have been very fortunate to get him. Thankfully he turmed down the job. No intelligent goes on TV and lies about a thing like this. Mallet is intelligent and thus unfathomable by some of the oaks here.
It is obvious to anyone with any rugby acumen that the man understands the game and now has vast experience. Would that we could use him here in SA. The poor guppies really could do with his services. Its been all downhill since Jake left and come to think of it since lardy John was appointed CEO.

I hope those of you that believe he was telling the truth about the matter are now feeling rather foolish today after seeing his " explanation " of events ? Apparently he has denied an approach from the RFU and says the report was just  a " translation " error. So the fact is, he wasn't approached at all and should never have said he was. As I have been saying, disgusting behaviour from those that should know better and, I reiterate, there is no position to fill at this time and there might never be.
Thanks, Wardad. I agree wholeheartedly with you. Things need to change regarding some players and systems, but not the core or Coaching structure as a whole. Things have moved on rapidly since Lancaster took the helm and what has happened these past few weeks, with regard the Press and some of these " fans " has been nothing short of a disgrace. I can assure you, they do not speak for us all and you are correct, some of the other Coaches around the world know exactly how it feels to be treated this way. Others know things take time to build, especially those who inherited what he did !
We need to stick with this and find a way through it. All this wil have achieved is to set things back again.
And I think so many forget, one of us, Australia, Wales or England, had to miss the cut at the end of the Pool stage. We are by far the least experienced of the three....just because we are at home, it doesn't always count for anything. One of us had to miss out. And many of us always thought it would be us. As soon as we lost to Wales, we knew that was it, no matter what
And yes, those of us that love the game and love our team and very sad....and jolly cross....but you know, we had a sort of relief that it was over, because we knew it was coming all along. I always said it was a WC too soon for this lot and they had to stick with it until the next one. But the reaction has angered me so very much.

Yes the number of caps was telling ,but this core group will do well by 2019 ,and sure as sunshine all the "fans" will be back taking up valuable space from actual supporters .Smartest thing the NZRFU did was to retain Hansen and co and avoid the 4 yearly re-set .Same for Lancaster ,and I dont think changing his stance on not selecting players who behave poorly would have changed a thing .

Listen ou Sopdoos sh!tbrain. Even though I only quoted one source, there were a number of reports about your opportunistic idol. The one thing that counts is Mallett's defence is this sentence in the above article:
Here are a few more for  you:
RFU denies approaching Nick Mallett this week about England jobRFU denies Nick Mallett approach over role of new England coach
The RFU has denied making contact with former Springboks coach Nick Mallett over the England head coach post.

Mallett was quoted in the South African press on Friday as having "received a call from England" earlier in the week sounding him out over Stuart Lancaster's job, but the RFU has denied this, saying they will push ahead with the planned post-tournament review.

"There is a clear process at the conclusion of England's tournament, which starts with the review," an RFU spokesperson said. "No prejudgements have been made nor anyone contacted."

RFU denies approaching Nick Mallett to replace under-fire England coach Stuart Lancaster

THE RFU last night moved quickly to crush suggestions that Nick Mallett has been sounded out to replace Stuart Lanacaster as England coach.

By Pete Samson / Published 10th October 2015

Mallett did not make clear exactly who had approached him and there is no love lost between him and RFU after he was rejected in 2011.

The one thing that counts is Mallett's defence is this sentence in the above article:
Mallett said: "I will not be considered. I was in 2011 ready for the challenge but not now. I enjoy my job anyway too much."

That, to me looks like we could possibly be dealing with another over-zealous South African reporter. However, there is no clear indication whether that was all that Mallett has said or did he perhaps say that he was approached but that he will not be considered? If it was the first, i.e. that he only said that he would not be considered, then it was down to the reporter who was talking crap. If it was the latter, i.e. that he said that he was approached but will not be considered, then it was he who was talking crap.

When something "seems" to you - anybody else should believe the exact opposite to that,   However, this is not even a discussion worth something.  If there was any approach - Mallett turned it down flat.  What would Mallett gain from spinning a yarn about it anyway?  So what is the whole issue about?   A storm in a teacup.

T here is obviously going to be an attempted coup of control of English rugby. "Give me the reigns, I already have Mallet/White/Jones/Henry lined up for the job!"

Mallet knew what was going on, and having been made a fool before, spilled the beens...like he did with the Sharks offer as well...where it turned out to be true.

Mallet never said he got a offer for the nob. He said he got a call from England. I believe him. It was nit an official enquiry by the RFU, but that does not mean there wasn't any fishing done. No need to get caught up in the details. There are obviously some elements in England who would like to get rid of SL.

I trust some of you saw the reaction to Lancaster and the team tonight ? The crowd were fantastic and they made a fair few things clear, I think. You see, we, the " supporters " not the " fans " or " sponsors ", we are those who really count and we are happy with what we have here. We know that, had we drawn or won against Wales we would be facing you guys next. Simple as that. And then ? Who knows ? The point is, we are building for the future and we will be alright. But the Clubs need to get their acts together too. More English players, younger players coming through the ranks....it's a system that needs sorting properly.

Oh and it was the first match in RWC history where a Forward and Back both scored Hat Tricks. But, of course, we're hopeless ( and yes, it was Uraguay.....but no-one else scored the double Hat Trick against them, nor have they against any minor team before )

Mallet hasn't coached in how long now? Easy to sit on the sidelines & talk about what the other guy should have done.
Lancaster has a young team so we will see if he sticks around & if the team will emerge as top drawer. One thing is clear, he knew the RWC was this year so why did he pick players that could be ready in the future? Anyway, he is a good bloke and I wish him well.

Thank you, hakwa. He is a good man. Decent bloke that has had a tough time of it when he was thrown in at the deep end and treated like rubbish, right at the start of all this. Now ? Who knows. As soon as we lost to Wales, I turned to my Mum and said that was that, they've lost him his job now ! And I think, up until a couple of days ago, he was ready to hand in his notice. But, he seemed a little steely eyed and resolute this weekend. Bit more ready to go down fighting. And good for him, I say !
Beeno....do you understand the RWC system ? If we had beaten Australia but lost to Wales and finished on even points with Wales, they would still have gone through instead of us. Check the rules of the Tournament.
There was continual disruption throughout this three yr period when he has been in charge, JW. He has not had a fit squad, his players were dropping like flies and they were key players ( serious injuries too in many cases ) He also inherited chaos, no settled squad so he could just integrate a few new players as and when he had to. It was a real mess. What he has done has been really good and he has good players and the makings of a really good team. Leave him to finish what he has started.

Becs the famous stiff upper lip has helped sometimes, as in WW2 where it was much admired in the States and finally brought in the US to help. By then of course the Ruskies had whipped Hitler at Kursk and pretty much settled the war, bar the shouting. But the concrete lip also failed famously in WW1, when good men sent younger good men to their deaths, without any cogent plan.
So this stiff upper lip thing taught to young colonials who often cashed in the cheques, is much  overrated.
Seriously, could any coach have done worse. Your team had no tactics and no energy...where was the competitive spirit, the joy in playing the game.

You can do much, much better....the English players are better than they showed at the WC

That's funny, Moffie!!

Hilarious!!

Let me remind you of the Japanese defeat.

An event that will remain in the history books for an eternity. The most humiliating thumping a top tier team has EVER received at the hands of a minnow.

EVER!!!!!!!!!!!

Against all odds!!!

The Goats were bigger ... heavier ... supposedly stronger ... with the advantage of having world class competitions, both domestically and against the best the southern hemisphere has to offer in super rugby ... as well as a rich history of rugby, spanning over a century ... with every advantage imaginable over the small Japanese contingent sent to compete against the Goliath.

Please tell me, you pompous ass, where was the competitive spirit you speak of?

Hmmmmm??

What happened to the joy in playing that game?

Love to hear your explanation!!

England lost to Wales and the Wallabies. Both top tier nations.

South Africa got thumped by Japan.

Could any coach have suffered a more humiliating defeat?

The Goats can do a lot better than Heyneke Meyer ... aka "Homer Simpson" ...

They would have had to qualify for the next world cup if they'd been drawn to play in the pool of death.

Especially if Japan was a part of that pool.

Perhaps it's best you shut your pie hole and be grateful that the Goats had such an easy road into the quarters.

You have maybe seen the light CC, well done
And yes, nothing to be embarrassed about, I'm certainly not.
If anything, the one fantastic outcome of that game was the news articles afterwards showing the humility of "most" of the SA supporters who embraced the Japanese supporters afterwards congratulating them, even applauding them on the tube.
Just as the loss made international news for all the wrong reasons, this made the international news for all the right reasons.
I am not fazed at all by that loss, because it reminds me of all the good that South African's, by nature, have, and they showed it to the world

This is not about Japan or anything else.  lets get the issuer straight. Mallett made a statement that he was "approached" and turned down the offer flat.  Whether he was or was not is really of no consequence.
However, Low Life and his sidekicks (Ceradunce and others) went on an anti-Mallett campaign and the reason for that  is easy to find.  Mallett is on the panel that discuss rugby tests and other matches and also on Boots&All.  According to them Mallett"s  -
*   negative comments about the performances of Francois Stey n, Morne Steyn, Victor Matfield, Jannie du Plessis, Pienaar, etc;
*   positive comments on Damian de Allende, Pollard, De Jager, etc
are the utterances  of a fool,  because they rubbish their own prejudices and garbage they write on the site.  So the answer is obvious - go on a personal attack on Matfield - and the present situation is just another example of "how low can they go".

DA you are quite right, I was at the game with wife and two daughters and, but for two guys behind me the South Africans fans stood and applauded the Japanese as they did their lap of honour. I was gutted that we lost but in hindsight it is was brilliant for the game esp for RWC 2019.

The Japanese are big strong and tacktically very astute. The Boks were overconfident and on the back foot from the 1st quarter They were a team that lost playing like individuals which was the most disappointing aspect given their experience. Every game since then has been a pressure knockout for the Boks.

I posted before Japan that we should stop back biting and moaning. The team is the team and the coach is the coach it is not going to change in these next 3 weeks. Lots of you fair weather ‘supporters’ said we would not get out of the pool and if we did that we would exit in the QF’s. Well I have faith backed up by my tickets for the QF and the SF. Go Bokke make me buy on for the final

Applauding the opposition when they beat you is nothing to be proud of; it is the done thing for goodness sake ! That is the way the game works. I don't know where you were all taught the " spirit " of the game, but it certainly wasn't around these parts !!
As for the " guard of honour " on the train for the fans of Japan. No, that was just patronising. As if they gad no right to beat you so it will be treated as such and you'll turn it around to all be about you....oh aren't we great ? Look at what we did ? No, they win, you lose. They get the applause and you all drink/chat and go home together. No need for silliness. That's what I cannot abide about Rugby sometimes.
And Mozart, don't start on your skewed version of History again. If you want to talk WWI, I think the view that the " Upper a Classes " sent the low horns to die in their names is such a left wing piece of propogandist nonsense that even they have had to realise it now. A whole generation of the Aristocracy wiped out, that's when things started to change in this country......and not all of it for the better. But we'll leave it there.
